SVT Questions

i agree with jimmyM, there are differences but most are pretty subtle differences.
same goes with swapping out tubes, you won't get a huge character change by swapping brands of tubes but there will be subtle differences.

i had an svt6 pro for a while. i liked that amp. it did get a pretty good overdrive/tube breakup kinda thing going on. plenty of power.

OK, is it fair to fair to say all SVTs are in the same tone family? I'm looking at SVT CL but the 7 pro is interesting only due to weight. 2pro is interesting too.
The same tonal family but they do have differences. You have the tube SVT's which do what they do, the hybrid SVT's with iron transformers like the 3 and 4 Pro that sound more solid state tight to my ears, and the "micro" hybrids like the 7 and 8 Pro which have qualities of both but sound closer to the tube ideal to my ears. The EQ's don't always line up with each other, but you can get classic Ampeggy tones out of all of them.

TimmyC uses SVT 2PRO heads. Your 3 PRO has the same preamp, it is called the SVP-PRO. Lots of people like how tubey the 3PRO's sound due to the MOSFETS, but it doesn't has the power that it's bigger brothers have. You have to know before you buy if you are looking for another rackmount head (which are the II (Master volume only) and 2PRO (which has gain + master volume knobs) in all tube, and the 3PRO, 4PRO, 5PRO, 6PRO and 8PRO) or stand alone head which are the all tube SVT, SVT-HD, SVT-CL (which has gain + master volume knobs), SVT-VR and hybrid SVT 7PRO. And consider weight as well. Ampeg also made a few pre-amps over the years, The SVT-IIP, the SVP-BSP (Billy Sheehan), the SVP-CL, and the SVP-PRO are the four I know of, and the SVT300 is an all tube 300 watt power amp from the II (Non-Pro days) that I am also aware of it's existence. I liked having my VT Pedal into a B4r, but as soon as I got my SVT II I knew that was how bass was supposed to sound, to my ears. Whatever you do, enjoy the journey and I hope you end up happy with your tone. Cheers!
