SVT Re-cone, or Trash

I have a 410 built from the remnants of an old Ampeg SVT 810. I bought it only knowing that the cab was freaking great, even though it had the label of a lesser company on it (which will remain nameless). After rocking it hard for 15 year I tore the first cone. When replacing it we discovered why is sounded so great it was loaded with SVT speakers. At this point I have two torn SVT cones. The guy at the local shop says re-cone, but I am not sure that the coils are ok, and that they are even worth it at this point. When we were checking for phase in the cab we did notice some slow reaction time. So boys (and girls), what do we think? Re-cone, or Trash them?

See what you can get on the specs of the SVT speakers.

And try to find replacements. i'd image the svt speakers you are touting are a dime a dozen - and certainly NOT worth the service to recone.
Well that all depends on WHICH SVT speakers they are...if they're CTS's (if the code on the back starts with 127, they're CTS's), I'd recone them, even if it's a little more expensive. If they're Eminences (67), I'd probably replace them.

even If they are CTS speakers - I still don't know if the price to re-cone is worth it. Especially given the fact that the is no vintage value going on here.

IF the speakers are CTS - i'd contact Ted Weber about making Repros.

That would be worth every penny.

The Weber repros are $100. I got my CTS's reconed for $81 each last year. I don't know...I've seen people get good prices for CTS Ampeg speakers in the past on Ebay, but maybe not quite that much. Still, they're pretty much irreplaceable...not as irreplaceable now since Weber started making them, but Eminence has no equal to the CTS's. And since they're alnico magnets, I think they do have some collectability. Not much, but more than you'd think.

I'm sure Jimmy can recommend a quality shop for the recone job. The fact that you have torn up two cones, I would say they are very worn. Time to rebuild all four. If they are Eminence speakers, then just get replacements and sell the two still functioning on the BAY. BOB

when you recone all the internals will be/should be replaced for the price quoted, that is everything is replaced except the original frame

i agree with jimmy, if you decide to junk them let us know

Why would he want to buy magnets, baskets, coils and suspension of a copy when he has the originals, he needs re-cones and that includes voice coils and suspension parts, then he has the equivalent of new classic speakers.
You American chaps are probably going to end up attracting a massive meteorite strike and end yourselves like the dinosaurs. There has to be a Fooking huge pile of scrapped magnets somewhere over there buddy.
Cant you chaps repair anything anymore.:hiding:

When I try to walk away from my house watching my compass, it just brings me right back home. This has happened about 100 times. I am trapped here.

Someone, Please help.

BOB
Maybe your compass needs more xmax :hmm:

Anyway Bob, a year I could have recommended Central Florida Speaker, but their website is gone, so I think they might have hit hard times, unfortunately...loved that store!

http://www.speakerrepair.com is the store everyone recommends these days.

Good one, I LOL'd a bit. The meteor will kill the whole planet, silly.
By the way, we sell all the old magnets to the Brits, for twice what they're worth.
