Switching to Bass

LOL, that's your first mistake!

The average guitard (a guitarist who THINKS he's awesome and knows all, but doesn't have a clue) thinks bass is an easy version of guitar and will often say stuff like "bassists are meant to be seen/felt, not heard" and stuff like "can you bring my amp down and get me a beer." Most guitards think they can play bass awesome AND better than most bassists. :rolleyes: Their idea of playing bass often is playing 8ths of the root or playing "follow the guitarist".

Like the guitar, bass is an instrument where your only limited by your imagination. Not to brag, but I think you'll quickly find that basses offer you unlimited configurations and tones. How many strings do ya want? What kinds of pickups? Fretted or fretless? Rounds or flats? Active or passive?

I played guitar for a long time (6+ years) and never imagined playing anything else as my main instrument. I then got into upright bass and now play fretless electric as well. To be honest, bass is a much more satisfying instrument, the role in the band is much more important, and harder to learn. The bass will never get boring, because there are endless possibilities for what you can do with it. I'd say go for it, especially if your guitar playing is getting stale. Playing bass will give you a whole new outlook on music, and beginning the learning process of an instrument over again has it's negatives but it's also extremely fun. Grab a cheap used instrument to see if you like it, then after a while look for something nicer, I wouldn't start with a ritter or benny...Sorry if I repeated things, I didn't read the whole thread.

OK, I play on my own time. I don't have a band. Before I took up the bass, I was told that the bass was a pointless instrument capable of doing nothing at all. I was told I'd be bored to death. I was told to get a guitar and play the four lower strings, because that's all bass was. I was told that the sound of the bass was so low that I couldn't hear myself play in my own house. It was infuriating, and I'm glad that I didn't listen to the "advice" and got a bass anyway. Bass is an incredibly rich, gorgeous instrument with an incredibly rich, gorgeous sound. You can do anything you want with it. I play Bach on mine, and it sounds beautiful. So yeah, get a bass and enjoy every minute of it. imo it has the most beautiful sound of any instrument I have ever heard.
