SWR 8x8 Henry - very cheap buy

ok so there is a guy living down my road, he's quite old now and has two bass cabs. One an SWR workings pro 2x10 which is sufficient for his pub gigs etc. However, he came to see my band the other day and was asking whether i would be interested in buying his SWR 8x8, it's 8 years old and in good nick and can take about 500 watts of power.

But, i know nothing about SWR amps, and I know nothing about 8" speakers, there not common. Anyways he knows i havent got alot of money and so agreed that I could buy it off him for a price well in my budget.

Ok so heres the problems:
1. I'm not sure if this cab is too big, I was looking at a 4x10 purchase
2. I love the sound of ashdown amps
3. Doesnt have much resell value because it is a rare amp (unless anyone wants one).
4. However I had a little go on it the other day, he runs an SWR head through it not sure which one but it is like 500 watts or something, and it did sound pretty good.
5. Lastly, will it fit in my Car? hmmm...

Just to add does anyone know how much this thing may be worth? I'm looing at other second hand SWR cabs and they can go for quite a bit. (sorry in advance if i'm not allowed to say this just tell me to take it off it need be).

I suggest you go with the 4x10

8x8 is wayyy to big, and 500 watts is not alot for an 8x8 amp. With a 4x10 "SWR golight" I think you can blast 800 watts
plus, I don't think that SWR is still making those and its not easy to find parts for discontinued amps.

Have one here.
It's my 2nd favorite cabinet after ACME B2's. I call it "Honey, I shrunk the SVT".
The only drawback(if you want to call it that) found was when playing on short stages the horn tweeter tends to "shoot right past you" since it is lower than say an 8x10 or two 4x10 stack. Other than that, I can't find fault with it.

Your questions:
1. It fits in the same footprint as a 4x10
2. Not familiar with Ashdown's sound. The 8x8 puts out what you put in more so than others.
3. You may be mistaken on the resale. With crashing economies, all cabs may fall there.
4. The one here is pushed CAREFULLY with preamp-->dbx comp/limiter->power amp.
Speaker cone excursion is one thing to watch if "over powering". Headroom is another
term for this IMO.
5. You didn't mention your car. It fits in a Chevy Tracker but in the back. Never tried
squeezing it into a car side doors(!!). Drive your car there and try fitting it.

I fit it into a Chevy Aveo (sub-compact) so as long as you have a back seat and a decent door swing radius you'll probably be ok. The 8x8 uses the same size cab as the SWR 6x10 and 2x15 cabs if you've seen one of those.

As far as price, I think about $500 is close to right. I think I paid $550 for mine and then sold it for around $400 about a year later.
