What do you guys recommend? Son of Bertha, Goliath III Jr or Goliath III full size?

I have my Silverado Special running a Goliath III and that was just what it needed...I always found the 212 to be wimpy in the lows so that 410 with it is killer.

So what's the verdict? I have a 2x12 Silverado and thinking of adding an extension cab, possibly an Eden 410 XST.

Thought I'd mention I added a 1x15 JBL K140 cab (8 ohms) as an extension speaker to the Silverado the other day at band rehearsal and after about an hour or so the amp went into shutdown mode. No fuses blown, but the heat sink was way hot and so was the plug jack at the amp. I disconnected the 15 and had no issues after that. I was running the gain at about 10 o'clock, and the master at about 3 o'clock.

Like I said earlier, this was a theme with SWR amps. You are lucky the amp wasn't permanently damaged. They did not have much thermal margin.

I was aware of the risks, but the JBL is only 150w rms so I didn't think it would be pushing that hard. It did have 12 caps replaced recently.

Replacing the caps had nothing to do with the survival, it was purely luck.

The power rating of the extension speaker doesn't even figure into this, the amp has no idea what the power handling is… it's the total impedance that matters. This is why I warned you of the potential issues, even with an 8 ohm speaker it can be problematic. I used to work for the brand that owned SWR for the last 15 years of the company's life.

There was most likely nothing wrong with the caps you had replaced. For comparison, I service over 100 amps per year (professionally) and I haven't replaced 12 caps in well over 5 years.

12 caps in one amp versus 12 caps in over 500 amps, you can do the math…
