SWR Super Redhead Advice Please...

I went into my local pawn shop and there sits a Super Readhead. The exact amp I have been looking for.

Price... $799.00
I talked them down to $665.00
But before I went to buy it, I wanted to test it. PLugged it in, and no sound. Nothing.
I plugged a bass in, turned the volumes(both) all the way up, and the clip lights came on, as they should when the volumes are at that level. But no sound. Not even a hiss from the speakers, or that POP when it is turned on.

What a bummer.... So I ask them what the price would be AS IS, and I can take it to my tech and probably have him fix it for $100-$200.00 bucks..

As Is Price...$330.00

So what do you guys think? Buy it, and if I put $200.00 into it, I am still ahead of the game, right??

I just talked the repair guy I use in SD. He said they are easy to work on and not expensive to fix!!!!!!!!

+1 on the buy it. Did you make sure the head was plugged into the speaker?

I have several SWR amps, and one of mine IS a Super Redhead. On the front panel there is a speaker on/off switch. Was it in the off position? Also on the back of the amp there are fuses for power and fuses if I remember correctly. They could be shot too. I would buy it and get it repaired. GREAT amp!!!

Goin to pick it up in a couple of hours. It is on hold for me.

The speaker cable is plugged in.
The speaker switch is on.
The fuses are all good.

I did get a hi shried out of the tweeter for about an 1/8th of a second.

I am going to plug it into a separate cab when I get it home just to see if it is the cable or maybe the crossover inside.

OH, it also has a ZOOM bass guitar EFX unit mounted under it. No power supply, but I will probably take it out and mount a tuner.

WELL....................

Got it home and after a 30 trouble shooting adventure, I found out what the problem is..

All the speakers are blown. The tweeter was completely fried.

So, this $330 amp is going to need the speakers reconed, or buy new ones. I have a friend that owns a sound company and recones speakers. What a deal. Tweeter will be no problem either.

Does anyone know what brand of speakers are in the SWR Super Redheads? They are not labeled.

Any Help on that one would be great!

Dunno, but you might just want to buy a couple of the cast-frame 10's from Eden.

Go to partsexpress.com. I just ordered some neo eminance S2010's for $62 each. Ive heard these speakers work well in the Super Redhead cab. They also have an CH2010 that I heard also works, Im just not sure what which driver is actually a better application for your cab, but I bet either would do the trick?

If I do buy replacements, I want to make sure they can handle the watage and have a kick a$$ sound..

I will check on the edens.

Any other replacement brands, ideas.....

Congratulations on the amp!! As mentioned above the original speakers are PAS speakers. It sounds as if the amp has been "rocked" a bit. Should be fine after the new speakers. Nice find!!

The diaphragm for the tweeter should be less than $25, and take about 15 minutes to swap out. Been there...

Can I put a couple of 8 ohm speakers in this thing? And will it rock just the same?

I see the Diaphram for the tweeter is less than $25.00, Or I can buy a new full assembly for $40.00.

I think I will try the diaphram first, I have replaced those and it is a piece of cake.

I had an interest in the Red Head since I'm in the market for a good quality combo with extension cab possibilities. Searched many forums and review sites and found too many owners reporting blow ups!! So I'm not surprised to hear yours had problems. Guess I'll go the Walkabout Scout route.

Closing in on 10 years of ownership on one myself, and never had a problem with it. I've pushed some power with it too and it's always been fine. Someone must have really pounded on it! These amps are pretty well known for sounding very clear and transparent and if that's what you're after you might see about getting the replacement PAS drivers for it (or a re-cone). I've never heard one with another brand of driver in it but I like it as is.

I have owned an SWR amp for the last 11 years... An original Workinmans 15!!!! I have never, in the life of the amp, had a problem with it.

If SWR owners are having problems with their amps "blowing Up", then they are not choosing the right amp for the application they need.. Or completely overdriving the amp to failure.

That is the #1 cause of dissatisfaction in amp purchases.

I will order some new speakers, and have my originals reconed for backup....
