Sx essex quality can I need advice

I about to start a jazz bass project
I want a jazz with a maple neck
I was looking at the warmoth parts but i cant really afford them so my question is how good are the sx bodys and necks are they up to the job or will it just feel cheap and flimsy
Otherwise other suggestions for quality body & neck thats cheaper than warmoth?

The poly finished bodies of 70's Fenders had MUCH thicker and heavier finishes (I've owned a few over the years, and played many many more) than anything I've ever seen on an SX.

My personal SX, that has been gigged extensively, has plenty of bumps and bangs through the poly, and trust me... not even close. The poly finish is actually fairly thin in the SX(a good thing).

I still don't get why you like essex so much, or why they are considered so great by so many people here.

I have experience with only one SX, so take it for what it's worth, but my Jazz bass came with some minor finish flaws. They added the hardware before the finish was cured, so there are small "dents" in the finish where the pickup and bridge covers were put on. From 3 feet away, though, you really can't see the flaws. The neck is straight and the fretwork is quite good. I got one of the ash basses with a clear finish, and the wood is very attractive.

The hardware is fine, but I'm not at all picky about tuners or bridges, so, again, take that for what it's worth.

I got one about three months ago and i'm happy with what i received. You have to remember that what you are getting is value for the money you are spending. It's not going to be a USA Lakland or EBMM but for what you are spending they are really hard to beat. The finish on mine and wood quality is very good and after i did a setup it plays really well.

For what you are paying they are worth the money. For a project bass i say they are a good platform to use. I got mine to learn how to do setups, in case i really screwed up i'm only out $150. Now that i have played around with he setup and i'm comfortable doing them it was worth it. I can do my own on all my bases.

You might consider me a big fan of SXs... ;)

I should put it in my sig, I've said it so many times. You're not going to find a bass, IMO, that's a better value. They easily compete with anything out there stock up to three or four times their price, and with a lil effort you can mod them to compete with many much more expensive basses.

YMMV, but that's my take.

I'll tell you why. After many years of playing, I came to the conclusion that I didn't need an expensive bass to be happy. All the important componants are there with the SX. Can't say that about many other "budget" basses. Alder or Ash, maple & rosewood. Just like a propper Fender. A little fine tuning, and tweaking, and it's good to go, all without spending thousands of dollars.

What's not to like about that?

I have an SX Jazz, and I really like it, I was afraid that it was going to suck when I got it. But I opened the box and it was ok. The nut was damaged which I am trying to swap out now, and we put a shim in the pocket but other then that it is ok. I am modding mine, but that is because I want to
