I'm considering getting an sx and doing some mods to it. My question is whether it would be much harder and more expensive to get a 5er and say change pickups than to do a 4. I really want a 5er but what sort of pickups are available that are P or maybe P/J style?

Probably should be in the Essex megathread, bud. There are plenty of options available. Finding 5-string jazz pickups are a breeze and P/J is only slightly more difficult. Ask the megathread guys and do searches for the various pickup manufacturers to see what they offer.
