Synth Bass: Creating your own Amp Head for a better sound

Good afternoon,

I am a synthist who loves using synths to play bass lines. I have quite a few synths: Moog Matriarch, Subsequent 37, Minimoog, OB-6 and many more. Nonetheless, I want to create a bass Amp head. I want people who play bass to share their opinion on how they create dope bass sounds.

Here is what I am thinking

Synth - DI box (Radial JDI Jensen) - Neve 1073 OPX preamp (1 channel) - Retro Instruments 176 (Vari-MU compressor) or Audioscape Vscape+ or another compressor - Saturator (I am thinking Blackbox HG2 or Blackbox HG-Q hardware units) - EQ (undecided) - Effect of some sort (Chorus, etc).


1. Does this sequence make a good bass Amp head? 2. If no,t what is missing?

(I also own most of what I have here, just want to know how to sequence it or change it.

This kinda depends on what you want to achieve with a bass amp head, but the one thing that surely is missing is a power amp that will drive the speakers.

From looking at this combination of things you listed, you go for a high quality preamp, into compression, into a saturator (I am not familiar with those, but it sounds like some kind of overdrive), into EQ into modulation effects.

And then?

For me personally, I'd want to process my signal until I'm happy with what I got and then send that to whatever makes it audible in the room. If I'm using my own power and my own speakers, that would be a power amp with connected cabinet.

If I'm sending straight to FOH, there has to be some sort of monitoring on stage, which could be either the PA systems monitor wedges, again my own amp, or IEM.

Whenever I place a cabinet in the room that will be powered by me, I'd want some sort of EQ that only applies only to that cabinet and not the signal that is sent to FOH.
I'd be overjoyed if that EQ section featured nothing more than a high pass filter, a notch filter, a single band parametric EQ and a low pass filter.


So to answer your questions directly:
1. No, this setup does not make a good bass amp.
Reasons:
A single channel Neve 1073 runs above $1000. The Retro Instruments 176 is 4000, same as the Black Box. Assuming you'd pick an EQ that's also at least $2000 and then add a small batch of modulation (let's be generous and factor in just another 1000), we're looking at roughly 13k already, and a 19" rack that is about as large as the cabinet. Add in a capable power amp (which is the answer to your question 2 - a bass amp head needs some means to drive a cabinet) which would be another 800-2000, and you have a very complex system that is a hybrid between a bass amp, a pedalboard, a modular synth and a recording studio.
 
I'm not sure I understand your use of the words 'amp head' here. Do you mean preamp/effects? Or amp sim?

Normally I see amp head referring to a unit that combines the features of a preamp and power amp. I don't see a power amp listed here.

Are you going straight into a board for recording or live? Is there a speaker cabinet involved?
 
There might be a terminology mismatch here. Typically the term "bass head" refers to a single unit that contains both a preamp and a power amp, meaning you can get a bass sound by simply plugging your instrument straight into that unit and plugging the unit straight into a cabinet with no other.

Some people (including myself) prefer to run a rack setup using a separate preamp and power amp instead of running an actual "bass head." Some racks also include other onboard effects units as you are proposing, although that is a lot less common these days compared to many years ago, as it is far more common these days to use pedal boards to cover effects in conjunction with a rack or bass head.

It seems like you are basically proposing to run a DI into a rack for bass purposes, except you are not currently including a dedicated bass preamp in your setup nor are you including any power source (power amp). If either the DI or the Neve preamp is capable of driving a power amp, you could make this rack a more direct equivalent of a "bass head" adding a power amp, although it still would be a fairly exotic way of doing it overall. I don't have any personal insight on whether any of the specific units you referenced will sound great on bass in a live setting since I haven't used them, although as you might imagine using bass-specific gear may be a safer bet (no reason you can't experiment with this stuff first though).

That is what I was referring to. I think the term bass amp head has thrown everyone off. The synth has plenty of low end and goes straight to FOH once I get the sound right.

I think i misused the term Bass AMP head. This is a preamp/effects setup going to my DAW

That is what I was referring to. I think the term bass amp head has thrown everyone off. The synth has plenty of low end and goes straight to FOH once I get the sound right.

So what you're looking for is the signal chain to be used between the synth output and FOH?
 
Yes, I think that is the more accurate term based on responses. It is clear to me I didnt understand what a bass amp head is
Looking at your setup from this angle, I'd ditch the DI between preamp and synth - there's not much sense in that - because you will need a DI at the end of the chain to send to the mixer, and I'd guess that the synth is sending a line level signal anyway.

Furthermore, you do have to consider your EQ choices, because FOH will usually go about things more or less like this:
1. Setting the gain on your signal
2. Applying compression as a limiter
3. If you work in the bass register, there will often be a resonant frequency in the rough area of 100-150Hz, where you get a nasty vibration from the room. FOH will apply a notch filter on that.
4. EQ the signal to taste.
5. If the signal uses distortion (and it's not a mic'ed cab), some low pass filtering will be slapped on to get rid of the nasty uppermost harmonics generated through clipping.
6. Setting the signal level to sit well in the mix.

You usually don't know what kind of system FOH is running and how capable the humans operating it are - but at the end of the day you'll have to trust them. You can help them along the way.
1. You can provide a signal with the strength they expect.
2. You can run your own comp set to limit your signal, so they don't have to
3. The notch filtering is something you cannot really help with, since you're up on stage, listening to your own monitors.
4. Don't overdo the EQ from your end unless you really know what you're doing (by that I mean that you have experience running FOH and know what's good and bad from their point of view) EQ does give you the general flavor of the instrument, but it's also used to marry the instrument to the sound system to the room, and that's where you can heavily interfere by boosting what they don't want or cutting what they need.
5. You can also run your own LPF and HPF to filter out unwanted frequencies so they don't have to.
6. Yet again, it's in their hands to balance the mix, that's literally their job.

From setting up a system that you think will work to arriving at the system that does actually work, it can be something of a process. Communication is key. What I personally learned in three decades of gigging is that it really helps to treat FOH with the respect they deserve.
I usually went to them, introduced myself, and told them what I would wish for with my sound, listened to their input and told them that when anything is not to their satisfaction, to tell me and we'll fix it together (also, when the band is introduced, asking for an extra round of applause for FOH (remember their names when introducing yourself)), and then after the gig, asking their feedback and what they'd wish for should we cross paths again.
It took a few gigs, but I did arrive at the point where all they have to do is setting the gain and the notch filter, being happy with everything else unless the room is a disaster for FOH.


The components you're suggesting are all top notch studio grade gear. I cannot comment on how they fare in a live environment. Maybe you could get away with cheaper stuff that's build more rugged, but maybe you don't have to.

I read your signal chain sequence as roughly the following, identifying each component by purpose/type rather than by individual item:

Instrument - DI box - Preamp - Compressor - Overdrive/Distortion - EQ - Chorus (or other effect)

If so, I would just note that most bassists playing live will run most or all of their effects between the instrument and the preamp, rather than after the preamp. The compressor and drive (saturation) in particular are usually run in front. EQ and chorus etc. are also commonly run in front, although you will also see some bassists running those in an effects loop of an amp to put them after the preamp (particularly where a tube amp or other amp/preamp that generates its own distortion or overdrive is being used). That's not to say you can't run these effects after the preamp, but since you asked for comments on your general signal path this is some info on how bassists more commonly orient these items for live purposes.
 
How does it sound? And are you playing Live or recording the sound into a cpu?
Right now I run my studio synth and drum machines rig (and a channel for bass guitar) through a 14 channel mixer then to the DXR15 - It sounds really clear and accurate, gets loud as I ever want it and has lots of low frequency range. It is not part of my recording rig directly, just for monitoring while I compose synth-based songs using a very primitive midi sequencer (so no computer/DAW at this stage of my process).

I have used it live and It kinda overpowered the stage a bit - I had the idea that it could stand in for a drummer with a trio I had and it put too much low end into the stage to work as well with FOH. Live and learn!
