The reason I'm surprised is because they are all some of the biggest charting artists in the world. You can't turn on the radio or TV without seeing them.
Nobody seems to be answering the OP...
you can get good sounds with your setup. I think it's a question of getting to know the SYB-5 very well and accepting its downsides: to me the tracking isn't always good and it has a tendency to sound rather cold/digital - which can be used as an upside as well..
In order to get a good synthy signal out of my SYB-5 I have to play *Very* clean, make sure my articulation is really good and possibly add a pedal after it to warm up the signal or at least make it more interesting (could be a sansamp, a chorus, a phaser, some delay,..)
Not having all the pedals everyone is telling you you should have is a positive thing: get creative with what you have and you'll get the most out of it. I currently have +14 pedals on my pedalboard (one of which is a multieffect) - took me many years to get them all and to really appreciate what each and every one of them does (still learning and finding new sounds - mostly by coincidence!)
