Winding length = measurement from the ball end to taper, where the full winding ends and the strings gets thinner. The winding length should be at least long enough to go past the nut, but ideally, only the thinner part should wrap around the tuner post.

In term of total length, bass strings by major manufacturers are usually 48"-50". It's just a matter of cutting them down to proper length so you end up with 3-4 wraps on the tuner post.

@ed morgan what did you end up doing? I thought to put BEAD GHS Boomers on my T-40, but I thought to check the fit of an old set and it looked like they would come up short, though I didn’t bring the strings up to pitch. I had an old set of Stringjoys that happened to fit, but it’s close.
