Hello everyone first I'd like to point out i have a-lot of trouble with spelling and grammar that has made me avoid forum's That out of the way My name is Simon I'm 26 and originally a Drummer but due to location and a need to be courteous to nabours had to leave them behind This is just a quick Hello as I picked up my first bass today, a batterd old blue with the G string missing but love it, tried playing gorillaz - feel good inc due to missing string But would like to know 1) am I getting ahead of myself with songs like this ? 2) do we all start this bad 3) will someone kiss my baby skin fingers better Many thank and hope to hear from you, as i may have many many questions
Probably, gotta get to know your instrument first. How to hold it, how to tune it, how to mute some of the sustain (our beast does growl). IMO the book Bass Guitar for Dummies does a good job of getting you started with this information. Then www.studybass.com is a good place to spend some time. Here is a good starting place. http://www.talkbass.com/threads/how-to-get-started.1098564/ [/quote] To # 2, yep we've all been there. There is hope. #3. Going to pass on that. Ask away someone will answer. Welcome.
Hey Malcom Thank you for the links will be checking them out. Ya.... may have rushed head first into this. But in addition too drums, playing along to songs worked with basic coordination, Rudiments and cymbal choking came in after. Sorry that may have been abit tangent, It's early here
Welcome aboard! Blisters are a rite of passage into the bass tribe. Only after you have achieved 'cement fingers' do you get to move on to the honor of full body scarification.
Welcome mate. it's good to learn songs you love, if it's too hard, take a break, I promise when you come back to it in 2 days,a weeks, a months time you will be better at it. it's called muscle memory and it always amazes me. Callouses are a bassists friend! Soon you will be drunkenly trying to light a cigarette and not notice the flame is right on your fingertip, like the rest of us ! HIC !
Thank you again guys. Will be sure to ask if I have an questions but mainly in the background. Oh and hope you all had a happy new year
Welcome, Simon. Unfamiliar with the song, so no advice there. There are degrees of "badness". Some of us begin worse off than others. With perseverance you will eventually improve. One of the cruelties in the life of a low-ender is that when you get good enough to get a gig where you have chicks offer to kiss your fingers, they're so calloused that you wouldn't feel it anyway.
