Taking Begging guitard in High School?

:confused:First let me tell you my instruments:

For first half of seventh grade i played trombone i wasnt good at it. and because my braces made my teeth hurt i had to stop playing it. but it taught me about the bass cleff.

second half of 7th grade i played clarinet, got good. and played it in orchestra for 8th grade. In a few months i will enter H.S. (a performing arts school) and my main elective will be orchestra playing clarinet.

for my 14th b-day i was given a bass because i wanted to learn and i begged my parents. So now im learning bass. it's been almost 2 months learning. :hyper:

but before i got my bass i signed up for beggining guitard elective in h.s. because my sister has a fender (even though she can't play) so i decided i'll play guitard if my parents dont buy me a bass. :rollno:

now im wondering should i take the class or not. if i do i'll learn stuff i might need to know. and if someone disses me for laying bass i can skool them with a bass solo and a guitard solo. :bassist:

don't worry i will still chose bass over guitar. just tell me what you think. oh and sorry this is so long.

Mate it's GREAT to learn BOTH!!!!! And the simple fact that the Bottom four strings on the 6 string guitar are the same as the EADG strings on the bass (except an octave Hiya) Also will help U relate to bass OR guitar later on possibly playing in bands-!!! I learned bass 1st. then the teacher told me to "go forth & multiply" when I said "I wanna learn more- he put me onto his colleague & I learned Guitar.. It's helped me ALL thru my music career. Prac. on a keyboard too if U get time!!!!!

I think an important thing for you to remember is that you are a musician first, and a bass player second. The bass is just your chosen medium to express the musical ideas that you come up with. The instrument itself isn't as important as the idea you are presenting. Becoming a more well rounded musician can only help you, don't put yourself in a box by refusing to learn more parts of the music you love.

I really respect some of my guitar player friends, and I really think its a beautiful instrument. I just love the role that bass plays, and I love the instrument and I play it because it just feels like its the most "me."

So no need to disrespect the guitar players, we are all on the same side!

Well, I'm glad we can all sleep easy now that we know you'll pick bass over "guitard."

Look kid, you've got a long way to go and braces really don't make a difference on playing the trombone. I played the trombone and baritone up through high school and I wore braces. and when they would hurt, it'd be only like a day or so. What did make you play poorly was your work ethic. If you go in to playing bass or "guitard" with that same work ethic, you'll end up with the same result.

While I agree the OP probably has a lot to learn (who doesn't at that age) I had braces in HS and they hurt like hell for days at a time, and almost all the time if there happened to rubber bands or plastic devices involved. I couldn't even imagine playing bone with braces. For the record I dabbled in Tuba in HS at the request of my band teacher who wanted me to march in parades, so I understand the mechanics there.

Even at a couple days worth of pain, it doesn't matter too much. You're not supposed to push the mouthpiece in to your teeth. You can play the bone with braces just as well as somebody who doesn't have them.

The point was this kid's approach to the bone was obviously poor. And my argument is that if he goes in to playing bass or guitar the same way, he'll fail just as he did with the Trombone. Besides, he should be focusing more of his time on remedial English.

the thing is that i hated the trombone. I had no interest in it at the time. I did practice hard, but many times i could not hit most of the notes. my teacher wouldn't let me switch instruments, and i was terrible at the trombone. so i used the braces as an excuse. I'm sorry :hiding:

sorry it was late when i posted it and i kind of wanted to go to sleep :crying: I normally have good spelling but it was almost 3 in the morning. I also couldn't edit the title so it came out as "Begging Guitard"

you know i too wanted to poke fun at the op's horrendous grammar, but after reading his responses to the -already- posted chiding remarks; all i've got to say is kudos! kudos for not retorting back with something rude and immature.

personally i can't play a guitar for more than 2 minutes without wanting to throw it at a wall (sausage fingers and whatnot), but i would definitely say yes to that guitar class. there is nothing you'll learn there that will hurt you, and so long as you don't mention to others in the class that you actually play bass, the guitards will keep their ignorance to themselves.

Ive played guitar for several years.. ok a bunch of years but Ive never been a guitar player. I play my acoustic around the camp fire and at birthday party's and such. and what Ive found is knowing chord structure and more than that the sound of a chord when Im playing my bass and I hit a wrong note I just know it so I say go take that guitar class. learn as much as you can all music knowledge is good music knowledge.

Why would you want to go to a class to be a begging guitard? Or even a guitard, for that matter? Do you want to have an overinflated ego for being able to play three chords?

Now, if you were going to a class for beginning guitar, I would agree with you. Guitar is not that bad of an instrument to learn, and guitarists are not as dumb as people make them out to be.
