Taking the DIRECT plunge

That's right. I'm leaving the cab at home. Even the amp, for that matter.

I purchased a dedicated powered subwoofer with internal DSP to bring on gigs where the PA doesn't have any low end.

I'll be plugging into my Donner Tuner Pedal--->Boss LMB3--->MXR M80D.I.

I'm hoping it follows the hype and helps out.

Anyone using the MXR M80DI for direct gigs?

Nope.. I'm using (not all at once tho) the following DI's:
  • Ampeg SCRDI
  • Mesa D800+
  • Sansamp BDDI Deluxe
Was ampless for ~16 months, then got pulled back into amp/cab situation :sour:
But, I think you're gonna be fine!
How are you monitoring? Wedge? IEM?

you mean to hook into the PA? will this be your PA or somebody else's, and will that somebody else be cool with you messing with their system?

because bass guitar straight into subwoofer is mostly useless

Agreed. I would still out into the main mix. It's more if an addition to my own great than anything for my home pa. But that aside, I'm still stoked for the new adventure.

Ampless for more than a decade. Using an Ampeg SCR-DI or Avid Eleven Rack or Bass tube preamp/guitar tube preamp/multi fx depending on what side of the bed I got out in the morning
You will be fine with what you have. You may want to add an IR loader if you're MXR is too bright/liveless.
As @s0c9 asked: what for monitoring?
Me I'm just using a powered 12" PA speaker as we are all direct, including drums.

Been amp free for about 3 years and it works great in my bands situation. Mostly bluegrass/acoustic music. Just a little bass in the floor wedges and I can usually hear the foh pretty well. I'm not sure how it would work for me with a loud rock band with drummer and keys. Hopefully, I'll never have to find out.
Fwiw, I've used various Sansamps and right now it's a VTDI. Works great for me.
B.

Yes, I'm using the M80 DI. Sometimes with an amp. Mostly direct into a XR18. No wedge. IEM wired from XR18. The M80 does well.

The approach seems fine to me. I think the wild card will be the LMB3. The M80 will be pretty sterile by design so it will be up to the LMB3 to provide the fatness and processed tone since you don’t have an amp. I haven’t used the LMB3 myself, but, it seems like it’d be a good option based on what I heard on YouTube.
