Taking the edge off

Thank u everybody for your comments. No disrespect but I know how to use a tone knob (been playing professionally for 45+ years).

Just wondering if there was a “cheat” to get 2 week old strings sounding like 2 month old strings. In 2 weeks.

Just play the bejeezus outta them. Or try DR Nickel Lo Riders. They break in super fast, and then stay there forever, almost like a flat.

I would use the NLR set that I toured with for the last 3 years, but it seems that set has lost it’s mojo - probably because they’ve been taken off and put back on too many times - trying other strings only to put back on the same NLRs - i always seem to come back to them.

I don't know how dead you like your rounds, but one of the reasons why I like GHS Bass Boomers is that IMO the initial too-zingy sound mellows out pretty fast but then you get a relatively long run of nice tone where it doesn't change too much. I would expect a set of Boomers to be ready to go with a little less zing in easily less than two weeks assuming reasonable amounts of play.

Thanks, a good suggestion. I’ve tried the Boomers and found them just as you say and that’s what I liked about them. Just not the string for me (don’t know why.

The main reason I want them well broken in is because the NLRs get a little thump to them after a while that I need for the music style..

In this case a low pass filter may do the work you want done, and it's easy to find out in the studio.

You’re better off with playing brighter flats like D’Addario Chromes, Rotosound 77s, or Ernie Balls. No hacks or cheats needed!

Is there a way to take the new string edge off of a round wound string quickly - not kill it completely, just eliminate the grind?

I know the Eucerin thing has worked for flat wounds. I tried this on a set of round wounds once and it worked - but all too well - it really just killed the strings. Maybe I left the stuff on a little too long?

Needed for a session in two weeks.

Eucerin apply make round wound B/E/A bass string sound dead much faster than D/G , absolutely nonsense idea.

If you want a fresh set of roundwound bass string that sound worn in , try GHS presurewound along with WD40 apply.
