Tal AND Oteil..

NYC 4 string Ken.
The one Roger gave her.

Man, it's kinda funny, but doesn't Oteil sound the same on a Warwick as he does on his Fodera or did on his Modulus???

I was on automatic pilot... so used to typing MV5... of course, MV4!

And yes, I think once you get that high on the neck and hum over your playing, most basses start to sound pretty much the same:p

Yes he does which is why all of this debate about gear and tone is ridiculous.

An JauqoXIII, I'm well aware of where Oteil is from, and it's Jimmy Herring's birthday at every gig they play. But Apt Q238 isn't really his name.

Just my opinion but I'm not digging Tals tone on this. It's too "choked" sounding and twangy. I much prefer to hear the bass played with a lighter touch and more finesse ala Oteil.

It's just one of many tones you can get out of a nice J with single coils (or sometimes good HC's). Tal mostly does not use this particular tone. I dig it for some things, and I think it works particularly well to provide Oteil with a groove and a tone center, but not get in the way of what he is doing.

However, choked and twangy is a bit of the point of that particular 'play hard enough to grind the strings on the frets, and probably overload the pickups and/or pre a bit.

Old school 70's style grizzle and grind there... I totally dig it in small doses!

+1 That's the classic 'heavy touch played close to the neck with ss roundwound' J tone. I totally dig it, and that's just a great example of the Sadowsky J tone with single coils when you really dig in IMO and IME.

The best IMO.

Thanks for that clip fleabee. Pretty damn cool.

EDIT: Oh, and btw, I thought it was heavy tone, and 'eavy tone, and βΘИΞКЯŲŜĦÏИĞ® tone?

You're kidding, you guys aren't all really comparing tone based on that garbage recording...heck on YouTube almost everything sounds the same.

;)

None of that appeals to me too much.

It sounds like I'm being negative...

But of all the current well known players these are the 2 that I'm not into what they are doing the most (I mean almost at all) funny to see them in a vid together.

Not trying to ruin the vibe, I just don't see what the big deal is especially with Tal.

Then again I dig Jonas and He is not eveyones cup of tea...

Its all good, I just wanted to voice the opinion of another set of ears up here.

Peace to all (and I really mean it).

Awesome. Saw Oteil playing a warwick there, which tripped me out since I haven't seen him in like two years. And then this from this past weekend, back to showing up with different basses!
