I had a new rockbass double buck the tone wasn't as aggressive as I had hoped & it wasn't very versatile , I like the bare bones rockbass corvette passive ,it has that traditional Warwick growl and fits better in the mix IMO,I also have the mb2x12 and it will really handle the b no problem,I also feel that the basic has a better b string , I think this is due to less magnetic field produced by the thinner well spaced pickups,they should have put more switching options on the $$ just series /parallel so you either get mudd or thin

I have the sr-300m (same as your favorite but 4 strings) and absolutely love it. I actually have it set up as a go to bass for drop c, with a 135 on it and the bridge took it just fine. The nut needed filing but i'm sure that wont be a problem on a 5'er. If you have any questions just pm me.

That's interesting because I'd read that people struggle with getting strings into the bridge bigger than 125 so they needed tapered. That's good to know.

I got to got the the Guitar Box today to check some of these basses out. As expected, the shape and weight of the SR305 was nice however, I wasn't blown away. Unfortunately, I then grabbed an Ibby with the Bartolini's (just out of curiosity) and was immediately impressed with the tone. It may have just been psychological but I'm still thinking about it 5 hrs later. I also tried a Warwick $$ four string but didn't care for aesthetics (Nirvana Black kind of looked like plastic) and I definately like the Ibby neck better. They didn't have any any Peavey's in stock. So I'm now thinking about a used 505. I'm not crazy about the color but there are a couple listed on the for sale thread that are reasonably priced.

Yup, just a regular 135 GHS (only brand my shop carried in singles). really versatile instruments and surprising quality at the price point. Not to mention the amazing 9v battery door, no more stripped screws from often changes.

What about one of the new (2010) Warwick Rockbass Corvette Active Basic 5-string basses? Alder body, active MEC pickups, Warwick preamp Just-A-Nut III, two-piece bridge. I think it will be more versatile than the passive (wish they were active) $$ model. ZZSounds, AMS and SameDay have them for $399 new, not a second. Here's a link to ZZSounds

I've just started to look at the Peavey model were discussing. I did have my eye on the ESP LTD F-155DX. I've found few refs to it on Talk Bass. Construction and layout of the ESP appear similar to the Ibbys and Peavey Mill 5.

I think what is turning people off to the ESP F is the shape. I like the Dark Purple color. Price is right there too. Anyone had experience with the ESP F155??
