TE Elf + PJB Cab-27? Or PJB Session 77?

Hi,

I'm looking to get my first bass amp. I tried out the Session 77 and it sounded great, but I'm worried it won't be able to keep up with a drummer. I also checked out the Elf with the Elf 2x8 and didn't like the cab. The Elf with a Cab-47 sounded great. There wasn't a Cab-27 to try.

Long way of getting to the point: I'm thinking of getting an Elf head with a Cab-27 since I don't think the Session-77 will be loud enough and it doesn't have a DI out. Is this a good idea or just completely dumb? I'm looking for the smallest option between $500-800 that can keep up with a full band at a practice and still sound good. (I want to have my cake and eat it, too).

I used this at an outdoor gig with FOH support and it was great. I have since gotten a second Cab27 but haven’t had the chance to gig them yet. But I love the amp and the cabs. Can’t beat the deals on them both.

How are you liking the double-CAB27 versus the C4-CAB27 stack? I LOVE my CAB 27 (using with a Genzler combo or an ELF), and I have a BG-400 (C4 combo basically)....and other things. But I'm wondering...

Can you elaborate on the sounds of the two different stacks?
I am imagining the C4-CAB27 having a deeper, louder and thicker sound, and the double-CAB27 sounding brighter and possibly more balanced, but with less sub bass? Please let me know.

Thinking about the exact rig(s) you're using with your Elf.

The tone sounds great, but to get the deep lows to where you can feel it, it distorts a bit. Also, it's not enough cab to keep up with a loud rock band.
So I added a Eden Ex112 12" coaxial cab, mainly because it was the only extension cab that had the same dimensions as the Cab 27 and I wanted my stack to have a uniform look. I used it in a rehearsal yesterday and it blew everyone away.
The stack has a ton of punch, a growl, low end that I can feel, and clarity that cuts through the mix.
For 90% of shows, I'll be running a DI out from the ELF anyway, so all I need is to be able to monitor myself.

After years of playing shows with 90lbs 4x10"s and a 2x15", this is what my future looks like.

Here it is! Small pedal board on top with ELF, tuner, compressor, and old Sennheiser wireless system.
Killer tone and plenty of volume for bar/pub gigs and rehearsals. Any bigger venues have FOH sound or I have my big stack IF I ever feel like throwing my back out.
