Years of playing in loud bands through tube heads (lots of natural compression) had me playing hard most of the time to keep a certain thunder under the guitars and over the drums. It sounded great, but not particularly dynamic and the amps often rounded off what could sound pretty ugly (clanky) through a more sterile/even rig. In recent years I've been playing mostly clean through solid-state rigs and finally spending time developing nuance- there is a lot to be said for playing through a rig and in a band where you can play with lots of headroom and get lots of different tonal color from how you attack the strings. Of course it is also a lot easier to sound "off" when you play dynamically, so I've had to learn a lot more control!
