Teenage communication

Or lack thereof...
Okay here's the deal;
My son, age 17, auditioned for a band several weeks (maybe six) ago. He said it went very well. They all complemented him on how well he picked up their songs (they've written nine complete).
There has been no word since. I've asked if he's heard from them and the answer is "no".
Well, it turns out (I finally cajoled him into calling one of the guys today) that they practice every Monday and Wednesday night. He can't go on Mondays and Wednesdays because he has evening class at the local JC.
It also turns out they consider him "the bassist". It also turns out they are playing the high school graduation in a few weeks. He just found out today!! So aside from me rolling on the ground laughing hysertically, I really am trying to be a supportive dad.. (Keep in mind I've been telling him to call these guys for weeks...)
Sorry, I just fell on the floor laughing again...

Is there any advice I can give him to prepare? I asked him if they do covers or just their own stuff. He doesn't know. The guitarist is going to formally write down their songs and give them to him this week so my son can get them nailed.

Little background; The bassists they've had in the past have been friends of theirs. The problem they've had is that they have all sucked and they couldn't figure out how to tell them so they just kind of let them go away. Did I mention this thread hinges on teenage communication????
During the audition my son blew them away with how quickly he picked up their stuff. He was supplying his own fills where it seemed appropriate and they loved it.
So back to the story and point of the post. Do you experienced guys have any suggestions on what he can do in the interim to help prepare? He is supposed to get the music "some time this week" and start hitting it hard, but until then he's just in a panic.
Sorry, just laughed again...

Before you all think I'm a dick, I've been supporting his music since the beginning. I was the one who suggested he search for other people to play with, and the one who introduced him the the metronome. I'm also the one who suggested he keep playing, at least a little bit each day to keep his skills and rhythm. I really do my best to be the supportive dad, but this is just too funny in a completely ironic way.

Thanks in advance.:help:

Sidenote: The rest of the band are all REALLY good kids. They all run on the track and cross country teams, they are on the honor role, they all do civic volunteer work, and are all headed, as near as I can tell, to successful lives. I would invite any one of them into my family. AND they are pretty danged talented musicians. They just don't communicate for ****. Sorry, I'm laughing again...

Contact the music teacher at the high school? She/he might know what's up. Get your son to contact the band leader right away. Teenagers have a hard time understanding someone elses reality sometimes. The band leader just might not be getting what its like to be a new bass player with just a few days to learn everything.

Actually I think they are going to be able to get together at least several times. My son's JC classes are done before the HS year ends.
He should have a few weeks of rehearsals (I hope).

He's good enough (proud dad talking here) to pick it up and not be the clunker, but I would like him to have the confidence going in to really nail it.

I'm sure it will work out and he will be fine, I'm just hoping for advice and encouraging words for the next week or so...

I don't know. I have a teenage girl so I know nothing about raising teenage boys. Apparently teenage boys dont text cuz if they were girls they would have sent at least a billion text's back and forth by now.

He's 17 he can do anything, I could when I was 17.

I'm 59 now, everything is a challenge.

Oh no.. They're way too busy being cool and aloof... Well, except for the emergency texts and other necessities that have absolutely no communicative value whatsoever...
Things sure were more simple 30 years ago...:hmm:

I wouldn't want to go back, I don't like using postage stamps.

Interesting, the guy I replaced in my current band. You know what one of the reasons he was let go.

He didn't have a computer or an any kind of internet access and would not use a cell phone.

Another reason was, he was always out of tune and refused to use a tuner.

You wouldn't believe how hard I have to work to convince the boy to use a tuner. "No dad, it's tuned. The bass is tuned to itself."
Well, that freakin' awesome. Most people can't do that. But you have to START with an actual tuned note somewhere to begin with....
Actually he has a pretty danged good ear. WAY better than mine.

Well, as you can probably figure out, when I was 17 we didn't have tuners. We had pitch pipes.:)

He'll be fine. High school bands are usually one step away from AWFUL, so if he picks up their songs fairly quickly, he'll probably be the bright spot in the band.

If they aren't half bad, they'll be the best band anyone's ever heard.

They should get an account on box.net or something similar, where they can have a central hub for communication.

They could include stuff like a calender keeping everyone updated of the time and place of rehearsals and gigs. It could also hold set lists, song charts, mp3s of rehearsals and songs to figure out, the agenda for the next rehearsal - what songs to work on for the next gig - what songs to introduce at the next rehearsal...

I had no idea that sort of thing even existed. I need to look into that myself. Thank you for that.

I noticed that about my dad too. RIP Dad. Sounds like you have a good son.
Yeah, I talk alot of crap and harp like a typical geezer, but both of my boys are great kids. I am very proud of them. That doesn't keep me from laughing when it's appropriate though..:D

I would actually advise something like box.net for any band.

It is pretty much just some harddrive space out on the web somewhere, where you can store files and share them with a group of collaborators you select. everyone in the group can upload and download stuff and make comments and running conversations attached to the files.

And a personal account is free for a amount of memory limited to 5 gig I think. Which is plenty for a band to store a few word files and mp3's.

Why do they practice on Mon/Wed?
Couldn't the days be changed?
How about the weekend to get ready for the gig?

Also, since they didn't contact your son timely, he can always turn down the gig. No harm, no foul.

Sure he could have called earlier but they didn't even call him to let him know he was "in" the band. How redunculous is that?

I'm 15, I know what this is like. I apparently got into some metal band with some people I half know about a year ago, endless talk of what we were going to do, but then nothing happened. After about 10 months I found out I had been kicked out for no explained reason! Not that I care for that matter, in my mind and everyone elses apart from theirs this band never existed, I'm in a few other serious bands (in comparison to theirs) anyway so this would have been too time consuming for me.

Most teenagers can't communicate, this is why I'm pedantic as hell and make sure every tiny detail for anything I'd confirmed. Perhaps I'm annoying to my peers, they just want to have fun. But I consider being a musician not being something you "become" when you grow up, but something you make yourself. They clearly aren't that yet.

Rant over.
