Tele Bass Copy Pickup Mod

Im thinking of adding a second pickup to my telecaster bass. I hear a demo of the squier telecaster special with the J pickup at the bridge. Strung with roundwounds, I was not digging the sound with both the mudbucker at the neck and the J pickup at the bridge. Maybe because of the stock strings.

Anyway, I want to add a pickup in the middle to get some punch to the bass, more definition. I was thinking a single coil 51 P pickup or split coil (to compete with the mudbucker). Anyone have any experience with this?

I love my sound, I just wanted more versatility from my bass. I also was wondering if my copy should even be routed. I plan on keeping it forever but who knows maybe in the future? Should I attempt to make it a string through body like the original? Would there be a difference in sustain, or tone?

Notice the String through Bridge design.

The Electronic seem all original with the original Seth Lover plus 1 Meg pots. Does anyone here know the original cap value?

A Tetris-block style P pickup, I think, would be a better match, both impedance and output-wise. Plus it's a humbucker as well so there's no extra noise that could be added. You might get something very close to Billy Sheehan's tone (he uses a highly overwound neck pickup).
