Tell me about something great you did this year.

This is my favorite question to ask at the end of the year. Looking back on the past 12 months, what is something (music/bass related) that you've done or accomplished that made you happy?

For me, the biggest accomplishment was playing my first live show in over 11 years. For a variety of reasons I put my instruments away and let them collect dust after my last band ended in early 2011. Covid gave me a good excuse to get them out again and knock off the rust, and then in 2021 I joined a band. But it wasn't until this past May that we finally started playing shows and man, I had not realized how much I missed it.

Neat. I'd love to make my own bass someday but I have even less talent with woodworking and electronics than I do as a musician.

I also enjoy playing as a Gnome when I have the opportunity to play D&D, which is a lot less often than I'd like.

All my playing makes me happy. Every gig. Sure, some ain't as good as others, but even those, we have a good time. Every time I sit down to practice, I love the tone, even if I don't love the song I'm having to learn.

In other news, this year, we rescued a greyhound.
After looking for a small-ish dog, we decided on the biggest greyhound I've ever seen.
Was gonna name him Thunder-thighs, but Tigger seemed easier.

Joined a country band and played a few gigs. Since I hadn't played country for 35 years, I had to learn a lot of new material.

Continued to play double bass in an orchestra - four concerts, and we played three of my pieces.

Arranged, produced music, and played for two concerts for my synagogue.

Served as cantor for high-holyday services for the 24th year in a row.

Since we are currently in Chanuka, I'll end with this, which just "dropped":

That's great to hear, and you have a real handsome dog on top of that. I love the sweater look. We also adopted two cats this year, after our old bulldog passed away from liver failure. It's a very different experience living with two young cats vs one old dog, but they are mostly a delight to have around (except when they protest pee on the brand new mattress I just bought for my kid... bad kitty)

• Ended a toxic relationship of 5.5 years.
• Started playin bass again after 5 years.
• Begun lessons.
• Started my dream boutique build.
• Attending Gym 3-5 day a week.
• Cut poopy carbs.
• Finally registered to TB after spying since It's begginning.
• Adopted a new cat.

I still feel like I haven't done anything yet though.

22 was a great year for me music wise:
- spent three times as much as I had ever done before on one instrument and got my own "custom" bass by Maruszczyk, absolutely loving it
- played a solo show at my two best friends' wedding; people sang, danced, cried; first time I ever went on stage alone with a guitar and a mic, swore myself that night it wouldn't be the last
- bought a house and was able to fit in a recording studio, fulfilling a life long dream

If the world doesn't go up in flames for the rest of this decade, I'm good.

Played a gig with a band for the first time in 40 years. A railroad career had me putting the bass away for 17 years so to be able to get back into playing in the last 10 years has been a joy.

Musically?
I practiced and learned to play and sing Wichita Lineman on my baritone guitar. Electric, of course, I'm not a cave man. It's still me, so sonically it's a lot like the sound of roller skates spilling down metal stairs. But I'm still proud of myself.

Not musically?
All the errata. My son graduated high school and earned a D1 athletic scholarship and mixed academic scholarship. My daughter graduated college and started a PhD program in a cohort of 3, over 700 applicants. My wife finally defended and walked at University of Texas with a PhD.
So what did I do? Kept all the BS the hail out of their way and kept the bills paid. I'm proud to look up to their accomplishments and to have helped in my small way.

1. Watched 4 seasons of Yellowstone in about a week.
2.. bought 3 basses from GC, took 2 back, last one I bought this week was a keeper.
3. Bought a Fender 100 for a practice and coffee house gig amp.

I got another awesome Modulus, put a new preamp in it, and recorded this song with it! I learned how to normalize video volume just afterwards so I'm not entirely happy with how it turned out but still learning! I've got an awesome solo bass idea for my next video hopefully I'll get the audio loudness right the next time.

I spent more time playing and recording this past year, I wrote and recorded more than any other year in the past. I also spent more time playing bass than ever.

One of my songs was so popular I earned $9.59 from streaming!
