This thread makes me sad. When I was in HS I had to bring my own computer if I wanted to use one, or visit the computer lab that had Tandy model 1's in it.

Please, note, I left HS in 1993. The Tandy 1's are what make me sad. Last I heard, they finally got replaced with generic 486's in 2005

pfff, when I was in school they gave us each a pile of rocks, a hammer and a loin cloth.

Yeah, I know that. You know that, but 99.9% of my 7th and 8th graders don't know that. I would even argue that the majority of high schoolers don't know that either.

Terrible education system? No.

The education system isn't there to force you to learn. It is there so you can apply yourself and advance your own learning. Oh, and you may have an A right now, but everyone has a level they can manage without trying.

I know how far I got without trying, and then when it comes to a point when you should try, and don't think you have to, you're on the recieving end of failing.

Fortunatley when that happened to me, I was able to resit that part of my studies. Did teach me a valuable lesson tho.

this was the most interesting thing i read in this thread, so i'd just like to pause a minute and reflect on it. now, i totally agree that there are things available to every kid in school and if they apply themselves, they can get really fantastic results and learn a lot. but i disagree with the statement that the purpose of the education system is to put kids 'next to' the tools they need to learn. that is false. and i understand your point in saying it even in passing. but i'm a stickler for certain things that i feel are important. the institutional structure of the education system in america and elsewhere is one of those things.

I passed so many math classess before college without literally learning a thing.I sucked,they teachers who passed me to get rid of me sucked harder though.

Now,at the age of 24,I haven't been able to pass this CALCULUS I class for 5 (FIVE) ****** years,I've started to take high level computer&algorithm classes but I can't advance in the math classes.Thanks to everyone who's involved.

I'm gonna go ahead and disagree...If your kid doesn't want to learn, GREAT! That means I can get by doing less and getting paid better cause there is less competition, thanks to your kid being an idiot. Now when it gets to a point where your mouth breathing feral child is keeping my kid from learning, now then we have to correct the situation

Nobody should have to force a kid to learn the child's parents should make them understand that it they don't do this they will wind up flipping burgers...If the kid can't understand that then..."Whopper Jr. and a large fries!"

If you don't apply yourself, you aren't going to learn. Nobody is going to force you to learn.

That's the point I was trying to make.

And if you do need your education bottlefed to you, then the real world will ruin you. IMO of course.
