Thaddeus Tribbett stunning tone

Did anyone of you watched this clip?

I am not only impressed by his skills, but the tone.. the tone is just fabulous!!

It is not too bassie, not too much treble, and still retain the clarity that you can hear every note. Plus tone-wise it is still not too upfront. It provide a soft buoyant for the song.

DO anyone has any clues how to get a similar sound?

All I know is that he plays a Fender P Lyte PJ. Other players use to talk about his cheap bass, but after they heard him play, they let all that cheap talk go.

Sorry for the thread detour guys, cleaned up.... Now back to your regularly scheduled thread.

Thad's a beast BTW, having seen him live in ATL a while back, I nearly passed out by the shear shrediness of the event. He nearly played every note on his bass, on every song!

That guy was a pro derailer, I shouldn't have fallen for that. I've been hornswaggled!

Near the end of the video you can hear his bass with little else around it, it sounds pretty sharp and midrangey by itself. And he was fine in the beginning of the video, but he really overplays in the last half.

Frankly, I think Tye Tribbett CDs represent Thaddeus Tribbett better as a Gospel bassist. That one clip has incredible shredding, but Gospel is primarily a vocal music. I am much more impressed with thoughtful support of the choir or soloists than I am with bass solos in Gospel.

Exactly!

While I lived in ATL, I heard so many gospel bass cats using every crayola crayon in their box of 256 colors (you know; w/the sharpener in the middle of the box) on every song like it was a thing of chop/lick status. Most MD's would tell me off to the side, "that guy isn't gonna get the gig, but we'll let him express himself thoroughly for the rest of the show, then we'll give him the walkin' papers"... :)

So much for lettin' the spirit move ya in church....

I'm going to guess there's not one single person in that church sitting there thinking "I'd be having a great time today except that bass player is ruining the whole thing with ALL THOSE NOTES!"

Everyone appears to having a blast! Including the dudes watching every note he's playing.....

Those guys cheering Thaddeus Tribbett were a bunch musicians who were geeking out on his skills. It was not a spiritual moment.

Yeah, this clip is one of my least fav. Even for me, a Thad fan since Concepts and Ideas, thats a bit much to me. Just that clip though. Everything else, he slays. His live stuff with Jill Scott is hot as well. Gouche has said that Thad is one of THE most creative bassists hes ever heard, not just limited to gospel.

One of my fav Thad clips. And before anyone says something, this is just a birthday jam, not a service:

I think that is beautiful music. I think the competitive musical culture of the old jazz clubs is now in the music sheds of churches. If he were a young man today, Miles Davis would be throwing down in a church in East St. Louis instead of one of the great clubs that were around then.

Those where the other musicians in the band pit close to the camera. The congregation probably didn't even notice him anymore then any other sideman in a pit as he was standing behind two keyboards as his brother is a rather flamboyant front man. Which there is a one second flash of him moving around.
