Hmm why not deep ferrules? I would have thought having a metal tubing all the way in would help to protect the wood from wear and tear from the strings...

If the ferrule is too deeply recessed, there may not be enough shear strenght in the remainder of the headstock end to prevent the "headstock" from cracking. Especially if the ferrule isn't perfecrtly aligned with the string pull forces.

OTOH, if there's plenty of material around the ferrules and/or the ferrules/strings are aligned properly, it might work.

There was a headless project not long ago where the builder used a hardwood with perpendicular grain to reinforce the end piece. No ferrules IIRC.

very interested to read your thread as i'm in a similar situation - wanting to behead a bass - i've found the bridge/nut (a la steinberger) at "fastsale123" on Ebay - these cost about £50. i've also identified a bass which i want to convert - EKO BX7 (have a look on google images).

any updates on your progress? any pitfalls which i should avoid?
