Tricky one this as its a warwick thumb neck on a body I made from a solid one piece zebrawood blank. Its got EMG active pickups in it and as you can see gold hardware. It also has a great warwick tone

I just signed up here and I'm not a player...BUT....I need a bass measurement to sew gifts for a bass player....If someone has a tape measure near by and their bass my question is: Approximate length of neck (35" to 37"??) and width of headstock with tuning pegs is generally about how many inches? I know it's variable. But I am trying to sew covers for the necks..do those things have a name? Not a full gig bag...just a cover for the neck. I am looking at sewing for a Fedora and a couple more typical basses...so just general measurements would be helpful. Thanks you so much for your help!!!

Headstock is 6" wide and the length is 44 to the bridge. Mesurments taken from my 6 sting warwick

A lot of people think you need a bunch of pickups. Nope, just need a good boost. This is basic passive pumped through my amp and sounds like the old days back in 1971 when I played my Fender P. It reminded me so much of the old P I installed the chrome bridge cover.

I also HAD the AEB30 but it got ripped off one night I was playing out at O'Toole's, an Irish pub in downtown Plymouth.

Here's an Italia Mondial I tried out a few years ago. It had a booming sound but it weighed about 20 pounds and felt like 100 after an hour. It was cool with rubber bumpers. It reminded me of the 60s . . . another era bites the dust. Sold it on ebay for more than I paid . . .

Here's a one-off fretlless made by Josh Helms. I bought this off ebay. I liked everything about this bass except for the mwah sound. I really don't understand why people say it sounds like a standup. A stand up is MELLOW. Every mwah sound I seem to be hearing sounds almost screachy. I sold this puppy off too. I wish I kept it to rework it but I wasn't into that at the time. I was buying everything I liked just to try to find my sound. This wasn't it . . . nice though.

Then there was the stage I wanted for the longest time (since the 60s) to have a Hofner like Paul's 62. This one here was the only Hofner I think I could probably buy:

The best one I could find, IMO, was the Jay Turser. At least it looked like a Hofner: I paid just under $300 plus another $100 for the case.

After all those years of wanting it, after it arrived and I played with it a few months I decided it just wasn't what I wanted. Not "my" sound . . . and boy could that neck take a dive.

You may want to post this in a different place. I'm new here so I can't say exactly where but I don't think questions about where to get strings belongs where everyone posts their gear.

At any rate, you might try JustStrings.com. I've had great luck there through the years and their selection is quite large.

The one bass I didn't really expect to sound good is my short scale Hamer Slammer.

It's a keeper.

Speaking more on sound . . . how many of you have played that little bass with the silicone strings? You know, the one that you had to take a bath in talcum powder to be able to play . . . yup, that little bastard, the Ashbory:

I liked the sound okay, nice and mellow, but what a PAIN to keep tuned. I even built its own custom hardshell case with crushed velvet inside. YUP, I sold them both off on ebay because it pissed me off one night. The case was worth more than the bass. I had a bunch of people from the Ashbory crowd wanting one but I didn't see me going into the Ashbory bass case business.

It was fun to carry around too. People were asking me if I had taken up playing the horn when they saw me carrying that case. They freaked though every time I'd take it out and plug in.

The next one I bought, and kept is the Schecter SB1-FL Fretless because it was made 35" scale with BEAD tuning.
