Stumbled up on it during a visit to Bass Northwest. I had been in the store for about an hour playing everything else. Roscoes, Warwicks, Alembics, and just kept walking by the Smith. I had played a Smith YEARS ago and it didn't float my boat. Turned out I was the victim of salesmen abuse. They guy intentionally steered me toward a bass HE wanted to sell me because he needed to move it. Anyway, I digress. I was in Bass NW and playing everything through everything, looking for some MoJo, and I saw the Smith and told the guy I'd try it. I think I had it in my hands for 2 minutes before I pulled out the wallet and put $500 down on it. Paid the balance when I got home and had it shipped. I've been fortunate. I've moved up in quality, craftsmanship and tone with every bass I've bought. After this, only a Fodera or F bass will do. But in the interim, this bass is all I need. PUNCH to die for, and playability that just fits my style, ya know?

I've toyed with the idea of swapping out the electronics, but e-mails from Ken Smith warn againt violating the S.O.C.E. (Smith Ownership Code of Ethics) #1 rule which says "Thou shalt not change anything on a Smith bass, or Ken will disown you as a customer and make you feel really really rotten inside for defacing his masterful creation. (Not to mention the guilt!!)

I wanted to try Some Aero pups with an Aggie 3 band. No such luck though. Maybe next lifetime.

I've heard and played a couple of modified Smiths. The good thing was that they still looked pretty much like Smiths;)

Ken got it right in the first place.

My Samick and remodeled fretless aren't photo worthy, and I'm hoping to have a new fretless 6 or 5 by May.
