I see people are asking for VBA400 soundclips, so I thought I'd give you something to listen to. Check out the top two tracks here:

A friend of mine plays in the local band Steve Cooling, where I'm the sound engineer. He's got a VBA400/VBC412 stack that was used on recording the tracks "All right now" and "Never reach the ground"; J-bass and P-bass respectively through the VBA400 stack miked with a Shure Beta 52.

It was until recently. As you guessed, it's 30" wide.

No fan, so it would get hot & nasty. Sadly, not real happy when it was being moved around. Something inside was always coming loose.

Did you play it through that 1552 cab? How did it sound?

Speaking of the fan. When i turn the power on, it spins up and sounds like a small jet engine, hehehe... :D

I have a few of those IBS cabs - 1520 (4x12), 1551 (2x15) and 1552 (2x15).

Since getting the VBA 400, I've beconme very curious about the matching VBC412 cabs... everything I've read about them has been very positive. I wish there was a local place that actually stocked them, so I could give 'em a whirl.

Can't help you on the VBC cabs, outside of saying I've heard what you have. But how do you like the 1520? I was looking for one before i sold the rig. (I had even thought about changing the baffle on the 1x15" to a 4x12")

I suppose it's not comparable to the VBC412. The new one was probably designed as a bass cab while the older cabs were designed to fit the cab dimensions. Or so I've been told.

The 1520 works for me. However, it doesn't have the original Sidewinders in it. I got the cab empty and loaded it with Celestion BG12S-100 speakers. I used to have them in a 1960B (guitar) cab, and they actually sounded better in that cab, than they do in the 1520 (plus they HATED being in a vented cab, so I had to seal up the ports). I've been thinking about swapping them out for some Eminence Neo S2012 speakers, but now, I'm thinking of putting that money towards a pair of VBC412s instead... I'd really like to be able to paly through one or two first, though!

I'd bet the sound purists around here would reco you go with the new cab rather than putting new speakers in a cab that wasn't designed for them. Maybe they're right on this one... And you'd prolly find a ready buyer for the old cab.

Heheh... you're probably right. Pretty much the only thing keeping me from pulling the trigger on the VBC cab(s) is not being able to try them out first. I don't want to drop a big pile of cash on cabs only to find out I don't like 'em!

Yeah, I put some NOS RCA and Mullard ecc83s in it, and have a couple of NOS Sylvania ecc82s on the way. the ecc83 swap made a big difference!

Ahhh...Marshall's and bass...how I love this combo. There's a guy locally here in Seattle selling an early 70's Major!!! DROOL!!!!....I'd be all over it if I had 3 grand laying around...but I'm poor! So, I'll live vicariously through you and your VBA's LOL!

If anyone is local here in Seattle, make sure to check out a band called STONE AXE...their bass player rocks a JCM800 with matching marshall 2x15 and 4x12 cabs...with an EB-0 bass...the sound is seriously old school amazing!!! I love marshalls and bass!!! Its just THAT sound!!!

I really bought it so would have a backup, just in case. At our last local show, I ran my other VBA 400 into my JCM 800 bass cabs (4x12 top, 2x15 bottom), I also ran the effects loop send into my 1974 Super Bass that was plugged into another pair of old Marshall bass cabs (4x12 top, 2x15 bottom). Talk about a WALL OF SOUND!! :D
