The Cure's Simon Gallup

You'd think after 30 years of extreme success "Bass Player" would try to interview Simon Gallup (maybe he doesn't do interviews or Robert doesn't allow the members to do interviews:rollno:). The definitely not for everyone due to their genre or style but the dude creates art!

I know he keeps his effects simple, but wish I had the full layout. Went to the free Cure show at the Troubadour in LA before Christmas and forgot my camera or else I'd have the pedal board. I’ve seen them 3 times in the last 6 months and The Cure is still going stronger then ever. Now I have to find a way to squeeze in Coachella!:D

I really like his playing. It doesn't hurt that I went through a major Cure phase and listened to that stuff 24/7. I moved away from it because I OD-ed on the Cure, but it's still a great band, and in all the bassists who I like, he's probably by far, the most effect-laden bassist (did I say that right?) who I really like. Wish is my favorite album. IMO, The Cure's best and most effective blend of the two emotions they tap the best: melancholy and anger.

My favourite bassist. He plays simplictic yet beutifus basslines and understands how effective repetition is.

Lovecats is the best Cure bassline in my opinion but for the bass guitar i love lovesong, a forest and lullaby.

I bought it great songs but the horrible sound quality and mixing/ mastering killed it for me.

Simon Gallup was seriously my first bass teacher. I first got a bass around the same time I got the VHS of 'The Cure In Orange'. Didn't have money for lessons, so there I was in front of the tv every day with the sound going through my stereo watching, listening and playing along with Simon. The bass is high in the mix on that video and easy to hear. I eventually learned all the basslines and was on my way.

@ The Mock Turtle Regulator: In the Acoustic Extras of the 'Greatest Hits' DVD they're also playing 'The Lovecats' (But seeing how old this thread is, you probably know this already anyway ;) ).

@ Everyone: One of my main influences, old Simon. A very melodic player. A good example for this is the bass line for the song 'A Foolish Arrangement'.

Oh, and a few weeks ago I saw the video to Bonnie Tyler's 'Total Eclipse Of The Heart', and it was shot at the same building like the one to The Cure's 'Charlotte Sometimes'!

Thanks for this thread!

The Cure has been my all-time favorite band since I was a teen. I've always loved Gallup's melodic basslines. That's a huge part of their distinctive sound. I've wanted for years to play bass because of him and I finally pulled the trigger and bought myself a bass a couple of weeks ago.

I created a playlist in iTunes with all of the songs I wanted to learn on bass and I realized that about 70% of them are Cure songs.

I saw the cure on august 20th 1989 on the 'prayer tour' at Giant stadium in NJ. I think that was ther first time playing in america.
I was only 11 years old and it was my first concert. I was on the lawn right near the stage.:smug:
My sister's friend threw a little toy that smaked Robert on his huge boot.

I bought my first bass because of Simon back in 1989.
