I'm with ya. Ive never understood the friction between those who use "bass type A" and those who use everything else. I personally don't care what the make, model, or year of your bass ( or guitar) is. I don't care how many strings it has. I don't care if your amp is totally handmade. I don't care what brand of strings you use. And conversely, you should feel the same about me.

I play Carvin basses, I use Hartke and Trace-Elliot amps, and I use Ernie Ball strings--and none of that should matter to anyone else but me. I'll gladly talk about my choices and why I made them, but I'm not here to proselytize or win any converts. "Diversity is the one true thing we all have in common."

I know part of it is indeed natural. I'm in the "genes control us" camp, and we want the genes most like us to be the successful ones. Stemming from that, humans are naturally inclined toward similarity.
However, we have to grow beyond our basic human instincts, because they really do get us into a lot of trouble. Part of that would be ditching the us v them fallacy. At a very micro level we are only closest to our immediate family and\or tribe. At a macro level the genetic differences between humans across the planet are tiny, and given the same environments, I personally believe we would all act more or less the same.
Then money gets involved. Then power gets involved.
There are those that profit in one way or another from keep humans divided. Politicians wouldn't be able to control the masses if they couldn't whip us into a frenzy against each other. Keeping us divided keeps us from focusing on them. Similarly, anger, resentment, and paranoia of the "other" is a profitable business. I call it rage p0rn. Jerks are feeding on our own natural impulses to pull away from another for their own benefit.
If our civilization, if not our species, is going to survive for another 1000 years we are going to have to do a lot of growing up. We are far more cunning that wise. We are going to cunning ourselves into oblivion if we aren't careful.
