The DIY Cable Thread

Concerning solder:

Is it really worth it to get solder with silver content? How is it any different than the non-silver variety?

Unless you have a specific reason to use silver solder, I don't think it's any better. Melting temperature tends to be higher so harder to work, and electrical conductivity may be a little better but not significantly so.

Opinions vary on this one, though...

I am using these Invalid Link Removed connectors with some cables found in local music shop. I dont think these are Switchcraft, yet they are good knock-off`s. Actually quality is the same as with both Neutrik and Bespeco patch cables. Price on these connectors is 0.85 $/piece.

Cheap.
Sound quality remains same as with expensive ones.
You can make them any length you want.
They waste less space on board.

Hard to solder ground, but i found one effective way to do this.
Some pedals have their mono outputs or power inputs too close to input/output, so you have to manage size problem. But this is rare.

Rosin core solder (lead/tin) works fine. We use it at work for just about everything including on $20,000 pieces of equipment that require high sensitivity and low noise. Don't believe the hype with other stuff. Just don't make cold solders and you'll be fine.

+1 I work in the aerospace electronics industry... very high reliability stuff, and we've never used silver solder that I'm aware of. Just plain old lead/tin eutectic solder.
