The end of Low Down Sound?!

LDS was a real cool "club house" like KJung mantioned.
You never really knew who was gonna walk in there sometimes.

I was there when Victor was in town and jut happened to stop by.
Wasn't invited, just went to a bass store like anyon else. Bought a bunch of DVD's and some other stuff.

Ken mentioned about cats playing and finding out later that they were playing with some massive artists.
Like Beyonce and the others.....and they wouldn't even mention it because the place was sort of a hang to get away from that.
Just to be a player.
Hang out and talk shop. No matter who you were.

I was their "unofficial" part time employee.
I sold a bunh of basses when they were slammed and I was hanging out helping customers.
It as a cool joint. Built a real community amoung the local players who normally wouldn't have met or had the chance to hang out.
And the gigs that we would hear about because one of the guys couldn't make it, so they would throw out the offer to one of the guys hanging out.
Happened a lot.
A real community.

On Saturdays, you could walk in and at any given time, have at least two or three of the hottest cats just hangin' out goofin and playing.
It was a blast.

I'm leaving for a few gigs down in virgina Friday morning so I'll miss their last day, but I'll stop by Thursday night.

Plus, Ryan promised me the the Will Lee poster they have hanging on the wall!!!! :D

I'm gonna try and at least arrange a loacl hang once a month to try and keep the family of players connected.
We'll see.

+1. I wonder if I can talk Ryan out of the Mikebass poster hanging on the wall!

Edit: Cool idea on the monthly hang. My house is always available if we want to do a sort of 'rotating' location for this.

Well, I just received a reply to my email to Don. He is indeed shutting down the LDS storefront retail business...but will be expanding his custom cab building business. So it certainly sounds as if he's making this move in order to concentrate on building cabs.

Great news for those of us from far and yonder who are interested in getting some of those LDS cabs - not such great news for local players who were in the habit of dropping into the store. Details to come soon on the LDS website...

Sorry to hear this.

I met a bunch of the MI Tb'ers there a couple of times and it
was a great little place.

Also, Ryan did me a great favor by procuring and drop shipping
some drivers for my DIY 2x12 in my hour of need.
Unbeatable service when no one else could get it together
to do what needed to be done.

Wow.....I'm really heart broken about this. This was THE only real music store in the Detroit area. I guess you really don't miss things like this until you move away. Afterall, Jive's store is maybe an hour and a half from here, and LDS used to be 15 minutes away when I lived back home.

I remember the first time I went. I met this guy named Mike...He looks much different now, but man that guy inspired me to get out and start playing! :bawl:

Good times....It was always inspiring to be at LDS. Check out the band I put together!

Yeah, I know that guy, he's a jerk and doesn't know the difference between a Jazz Bass and his a$$.
Punk of a player too. Needs to go back and practice!

He inspired you to get out because if he was doing it......this town must be desperate!!!!

Sad to see this thread again. The closing of the LDS retail store really has left a hole in the Detroit bass community. I rarely see anyone here anymore (even though I've hosted a couple of small GTG's since then). I still see my TB buddies like Burk and Mike and Jason (Vision), etc. which is great. But I really miss running into all the other cats on a weekly basis:hmm:

The good news is that Don and I have lunch about every other week, and the cabinet business is going strong!

I know this post is approaching 20 years old, but is it still possible to get in touch with Don? I have an LDS cabinet and I need some help with it.
