THE funk bass?

I think of two different tones. Theres the classic stingray funk tone, and then theres the slightly more middy, jazz with flats type tone.

that's right i forgot rick james used a Ric a lot...

That right there is a big misconception; Rick James posed with a white Rickenbacker because he liked the look of it, but his bass player (live and on record) used mostly a Stingray, and an Alembic.
When Rick played some bass in concert he would grab also a Stingray most of the time.

Nothing can replace a good player..When you talk about Funk bass it depends

60's funk/r&b- PBass
70's funk-Jazz bass
Stingray... late 70's disco/funk

Any number of basses will do. But I'll always think P, Jazz, and to a lesser extent, Stingray

My ol 78 Mia's got all the nasty P and glammy D I need..

I'd say the MM would be the best sounding funk bass, but everyone has their ideal sound in their head and the MM wouldn't cover all of them. A Fender P/J makes a sweet slap tone as well.

I'm kind of a classicist, so I'd go with a Fender Jazz ’62 RI or Precision RI for that Miller or Jamerson sound. For a more modern, techy funk sound, I think the Stingray's the right way to go.

But, as people have shown us here, If the player's funky enough, the axe doesn't really matter. For me (mostly because I *love* that old, fat funk from the ’60s and ’70s), I prefer the old passive classics.

4 sure! but maby not in the same way..
I use my 5 string fretless:

Run it throu a E-H Qtron and Octaver.. Sound even better than those 70's moog-type-synth-lines.. Need a amp & cabs that can handle the Hz though.. I get past G and the roof starts shakin! hehe
