Yeah in the final analysis it will be about finding the spot that just sounds about right (TSAR) - the audio version of TLAR. I suspect that lot's of things are placed by TLAR and 'What will be easy to manufacture?'

Sliding pickups around may come more into play with 2 pickups. We'll see.
 
Yeah, I'm sure that's what Leo did when he was experimenting with where to locate the pickups of the P and J basses. He'd worked out a formula for making the pickups easily and consistently, and the positioning on the instrument was just a fine adjustment of the overall sound. Until it sounded about right to his ear. Nothing more magical than that.
