The most ridiculous rig sounds so good...

Hey all, so against my better judgement (as well as despite advice I received on here a while ago), I traded one of my Squier J-basses for an Acoustic 150 head. I think it was a case of too many basses not enough old amp type situations that caused all the problems. lol.

Anyways, I brought the head home before taking off for an out of town covers weekend. I left the head at home as I do not currently have a cabinet to go along with the head and brought my Fender Bassman 250 1X15.

Well, fast forward to today. I was practicing in my studio when boredom took over and I decided to link the Acoustic head to the Bassman cabinet via one of those 1/4 inch to 1/4 inch connector thingy's and give it a whirl.

My first thought was "holy crap, this thing is LOUD!" my second thought was "wow does this head sound great with my 2000 MIA J-Bass strung with flats." (I'm paraphrasing here lol.)

I then plugged into the other side of the head that has the reverb, and started fooling around. I cannot imagine what, if any application the reverb could possibly have but I do know that I immediately felt as though I should tie dye my shirts, grow dreads, do a bunch of peyote and set up somewhere in the desert with a sitar player.

Anyways, here's a picture of the most ridiculous rig I've ever created:

I know I'll have to get a cabinet eventually but I kinda like all the knobs.

A separate reality, huh? LOL. Yeah, well, I was running my Little Mark III head through the cab of my Fender Bassman 150's 12" the other day. That's 500w at the Fender's 4ohms, so I had to watch it. It did sound good, though.

Hey, I played a quiet gig Friday night with the little Bassman. It is a great sounding amp, actually.

Hahaha, yeah.
I actually really like the Bassman. It's a nice sounding amp and I've played it on almost every gig I've done since last November and that's around 200 shows. It's reliable, tough as hell and as I said before it sounds pretty decent.
I really like the Acoustic 150 though. It sounds really focused and has a nice old school John Paul Jones tone to it that really shines through using the 1 X15. I'd call it round but tight, not pillowey like the Bassman.
I've got a blues/country gig tonight that I'm gonna play the current setup at and I can hardly wait to hear it with a band. Plus, I imagine that it'll get a few laughs from the other guys.

Based upon the terminology used, I am going to assume that you do not know the difference between an instrument cable and a speaker cable (If I am wrong, I apologize).

Please make sure that you only use speaker cables to connect any head to cabinets as using an instrument cable can cause damage to the head.

I think he meant he used an adapter that has female 1/4" on both ends. I have one that I do the same thing with sometimes.

So my gig last night was the first time I've played the setup with a full band as I'd mentioned before.

I was right about giving the guys something to laugh about. More importantly the head sounded great at the higher stage volume and my bass definately cut through the mix much more clearly. All in all I am quite pleased with my little trade. The next step I suppose is to try to find a cabinet. I think I'm going to be looking for a 1 X 15 but I may try to demo some 4X10's as I haven't played through one in a long time.

My only complaint is that all the knobs are stiff to turn and kinda noisy, I don't really know how to clean them, but that's what the internet is for!
