If this is about a bland, kind of gross substance that's present purely for the nutritional value and typically has to be "flavored" by other products, I believe that's called tofu.

You take chicken for example, maybe they couldn't figure out what to make chicken taste like, which is why chicken tastes like everything. Maybe couldn't figure out...
