The Official Bill Lawrence/Wilde Pickups Club

Just found a boatload of Youtube bass videos with Wilde pickups, including the nearly non-existent demos of J-45s, so I figured this would be the place to share.

Here are a couple videos, but he has many more on his YT channel. He mainly posts covers and separately the isolated bass video, so you can compare. If you dig around, you can find different pickup blend settings and techniques, tho I mainly saw him playing with a pick with both pups on.

Is anyone using this on a 6-string? Seems like there would be very little overlap between the coils. Would that be an issue for him cancelling?

Do you mean the P-46? It's designed for that, but for a narrower string spacing. Outside poles on each half are 36mm apart, which would allow about 18mm string spacing (over the pickup). It may not sound optimal on the other strings, so I'd consider a little narrower spacing, perhaps 16mm.

Humcancelling should work fine, it's the property of the pickup, not strings above it. Even when the two halves overlap, like on a 5-string bass, folks here reported no interaction.

The J pickup is, I believe, designed for 4 and 5 string basses, but not 6.

I’ve had a P46 laying around for about a year, finally popped it into a fretless Warmoth P I put together a few years ago. Wow. These pickups definitely don’t need help in the volume department! I had them cranked pretty low to keep them out of the way while getting things set up, expecting I’d need to raise them but no.

Tonally, like a P-bass but just more balance/detail/whatever you want to call it. Sounds great, I like it a lot more than the EMG it replaced.

Two thumbs up from me!

Volume aside, I find that adjusting the height brings different aspects of the sound into focus - closer isn't always better (though I used to think so, years ago).

Help me figure this out. I looks like the P46 won't drop-in on this 5-string bass. What would be the best way to go about this? I'm not adverse to getting a different pick guard or even cutting my own.

Could you explain the the steps required for conversion?

Theyre differently-sized holes. The smaller will fit into the larger space, obviously, leaving a gap. The larger will not fit into the smaller space unless you remove wood.

But the primary consideration is how well they match your string spacing. It’s possible the P46 would have a wide enough span, since the extra magnet per side gives a wider field. Can you lay a ruler across your strings and snap a photo?
