Has a certain "konk" sound in the mids that's hard to dup without a pbass pup in the correct position.

I gotta agree- I think the split-coil design is responsible for that signature tone. A high output humbucker by design seems to cancel out too much of the highs/high mids to sound like that. I think it can do a pretty decent "P with the tone knob turned down" sound. I do think an L1000 in single coil does a pretty good P though.

My take on the Precision sound (compared to my '76 Precision with DiMarzios) for the L-2000 is passive, serial, neck pickup, bass and treble about 80%. I was surprised how close this is to your proposed "Precision bass" settings. I use GHS Bass Boomers on all of my basses and the pickups are set up not too high.

But it still has a slightly different character.

I, for one, cannot duplicate my Pbass on my L2000. Some quality in the mids of the Pbass just set it apart from any of my other basses. I can even get closer to a Ric than a Pbass but find the L2000 has it's tone that stands just fine.

+1. I can get close to the Duck Dunn sound by muting the stings with a piece of foam at the bridge and rolling of all highs in passive, neck, series, but it still sounds a bit too defined.
