the orange sp410 debate

hi to all you fellow bass players ive finally gave in and joined my first forum cos i just cant find the answer to my question anywhere !!

although this bass cabinet has been discussed quite a bit there is no conclusive evidence whether it actually replaces a standerd size 4x10 in a live gig situation

Ive been playing bass now for 15 years but ive only recently become a gear freak i have svt 2 pro lined up to buy its my first valve amp and im clueless as to what to pair it with hence my question bout the sp410, im not getting any younger so im trying to get as much power for as little weight but without tone compromise

i know there is some very clever people on this forum so im looking forward to a professional opinon

cheers guys for your quick reply i dont think i have the redies to buy two of them lol so wot youse reckon for a cab to pair up with the svt pro 2 ?

hasnt that design been done before and considered obsolete with designs of modern speakers?

I would not see how it would be able to replace a 410 in a live setting..

one thing that i see that wouldnt be so good is that its no wear near ear level? one of the only reason I like 810s is because of that reason.

yeah i love the ampeg sound but im only familiar with ampeg solid state i guess the valve amps are gonna sound better just i never thought of running an ampeg head with another cab i was always under the impression that ampeg was the class leader until i start going thru these forums !!! thats were i read that ampeg head works well with an orange cab

thing is if i want to try any of this gear i nead to take my guitar and get on a plane cos there just isnt the market for quality stuff in ireland

so im very dependant on everybody experience cos we all know you cant trust the sale guy !!!

I really want to try one myself. The wisdom I have read here and on other forums is that isobaric designs arent any better than a 2x10 (or other equivalent) due to only two cones actually interfacing with the air in the room. Though I do wonder if the increased amount of magnet/voicecoil doesnt contribute something? It is hard to say unless you can line up identical speakers in both isobaric and non isobaric formats. I know I would rather just pony up for a "real" 4x10 than gamble on a design that may or may not be as good. Though the smaller size is tempting. Maybe better to check out Schroeder cabs for small/loud.

matter of opinion. any good cab will work with any good head. but for me, i do like to keep the ampegs together.

The size and the neo drivers keeps the weight down. The net internal volume, exclusive of the plenum between the drivers, is half that of a normal 2x10 that has the same response, so that's the benefit. To get the same low end sensitivity from a 2x10 would require a fair bit larger cab. Whether paying for four drivers instead of two in order to get a smaller cab is worth it to you is the operative question.

Speaker modeling software allows making 100% precise comparisons. For the technically astute two drivers isobaric model the same as a single driver save for Vas, which is halved.

Hey Guys-

Just wanted to add my 2 cents on this subject. I use 2 of the SP 410 cabs mated to a 2,400 watt SansAmp RBI/BBE 482i/Crown rack system and I love them. My rig now has the exact tone I have been searching for...loud, gritty and with plenty of definition. Plus they are small and not too heavy. I can fit my entire rig in the cargo area of my Jeep! They are sweet cabs and I highly recommend you give them a shot. Peace.

+1000 to this. I have two of the SP410's and one by itself is definitely louder than a standard 410 I've ever tried.
