The Pedulla Club!

2006 Thunderbass

It'll be a while, but some day I'll be joining this club. Got my heart set on a Rapture 5 string, but I've already got a Ric 4004Cii on order, (since 11/06) that I need to get first. Besides the Rapture, I'm also looking at a 75 RI Jazz, which will hopefully complete my bass "wants". Be seeing you all soon, I hope.

I came extremely close to making either a Rapture J-2000 or Thunderbass my "Überbass", but was coming out of a "phase" of playing neck-throughs and "Coffee Table Tops" into fairly straight Jazz basses, and at the time the combination of the all-maple Rapture and Bart pickups didn't do much for me, plus there was a price chance over the last few years that honestly bring them pretty close to "diminishing returns". :( There used to be a picture on the site of a Special Order Rapture J-2000 with a AAA-maple top but a swamp ash as a back... I'd love to hear what the difference of Ash gives over the brightness of an all-maple bass. And you simply cannot out-do some of these finishes:

Rapture-5 AAA "Arctic Night"

Rapture RBT-5 (RBT = the successor to the J-2000 series) Charcoal

Thunderbolt ETB5 AAA Vintage Cherry w/poly body

I want those Raptures. I want the single bucker though, but man I will own a Rapture soon.

hey lonny, i was checking out your myspace and noticed in some pictures of your thunderbolt there is the 3 knob configuration. did you get it upgraded? Is the bass much more versatile with the treble and bass knobs as opposed to just the tone knob?

Good catch. I actually did have the bass upgraded to the full TBT harness. For some time I'd been getting requests from live engineers to put out a little more low end for the board signal, and since I always run pre-EQ on my Alembic F-1x, I needed to have extra bass control on the instrument.

It really does add a lot more flexibility than the sole tone knob - the bass boost is positively crushing without being unusable (like some active circuits) and the active treble adds a lot more snap.

It is trickier, however, to balance boost while you have the Thunderguts circuit engaged - the switch gives you access to an already aggressive, modern sound - so bumping up even a little of the bass knob can be a little TOO huge-sounding for some mixes, especially through mid-centered cabinets.
