I had been listening to some different sounds Ed Friedland is getting from his basses, and stumbled across his '74 Jazz Bass sample. OMG!!! I've never heard such a perfect tone. Now if I could figure out how to set up my guitar to get that kind of sound, I'd be one happy camper. Kudo's to you, sir.
FWIW Gets my "best bass tone ever" award. That and $7.50 should get him a double shot espresso at starbucks.

All I hear there is a bunch of snapping and popping... I think my speakers may be going bad. I went there expecting actual usable bass sounds.

See if you can try out a Sadowsky Outboard preamp and fool around with it. Boost the bass control on the preamp and favour the bridge pickup. Or, try a Sadowsky if you can. The preamp is a cheap way to get that magic tone. I used it for about 10 years before getting a Sadowsky bass. Works wonders with jazz basses.

Naw...that's ok. I'm guessing this has something to do with it. That, and knowing how to set up ideally for a style of playing.

They won't work as well with a P as well as a Jazz. I had hoped it would give me that magic sound. I was playing a Precision when I bought the preamp. It works best with a Jazz.

Yeah that figures, a mid control would probably be more appropriate I guess.

Supposed to work great with another Fender, a Jazzish bass.

In fact the bass I speak of, its namesake has one on his board, for solo sections.
