The pickup 70 CV Squier?

So...I'm jamming along with Geddy today - Jacobs's Ladder on my Squier CV 70's Precision (cobalt flats, all black hardware, Hipshot Kickass 4, Geezer EMG) through a 20 year old Laney RBW200 and I notice a weird thud when playing certain parts. I normally play through a Line 6 GX Studio with headphones (family) - but they are out and I fired up the Laney - I heard the thud - the way I anchor my thumb on the pickup caused it to move up and down (foam? ***). I have the "E" side of the PUP height set to balance across strings - there is a lot of travel. I believe I know how to fix...but WOW..without the headphones things get realer?
