The search for tighter bass?

I suggest an ampeg 410HE or 810E depending on how much volume you need. Thats the definition of tight but fat bass.

Just stuff a folded acrylic blanket into one port on each cab. You know the ones, usually there's a lion or wolf printed on them. If the test works then trek out for some egg crate/convoluted foam mattress topper from the fabric store. Don't waste a lot of money on this. I disagree. That sounds like a good way to convince yourself that you don't want a sealed cab without hearing a properly executed example.

Go play a 410HE at a shop and see how it feels.

I've heard a lot of great things about the GK. Is it possible to get a warm tone out of the MB800? I'm sure you can with the fusion but I don't know about the normal version. I want tight and punchy, but not cold and sterile tone.

IME, yes, I get a warm tone using my MB800, but you may have a different idea of warmth. My cabinet is usually a single fEARful 15/6/1. I typically use either a passive CS Jazz relic, or an active soap bar equipped Valenti 5-string or Sadowsky 4-string P/J. I am using the Jazz a lot again, and have it strung with DR Hi-beam rounds.

Using the clean channel, the preamp is set to about noon, and the master is set to whatever I need.
I roll the fEARful tweeter off about 75%, on the MB800 I cut the treble to 9 o'clock, hi-mids at 11 o'clock, Low-mids at 2 o'clock, lows at 4 o'clock.

Then I manage the tone mostly from the stack pots on the Jazz, or by how I play. Forgot to mention, I often roll-in an FDeck HPF v.3.

Well I compared the Ampeg direct into my recording interface against the Carvin and I guess I just don't love the Ampeg tone as much as I thought. It sounded looser through a good set of headphones too.

IMHO, you need a cleaner head. Ampeg wanted this head to get a kind to signature Ampeg sound, which it does. Nice head, but sometimes it is not the right thing.

Get an M6, an MB800, or a demeter tube pre + a PA power amp. Might I suggest a VTbp 201s?
