You've obviously played a myriad of Precision and Jazz Basses over the years so you may be the man to ask.

Recently, I've been switching between my custom Fender J with Geddy Lee neck and my modded Highway One P (with Fralins and 70s repro harness) quite a bit during sets, and I must admit, I'm struggling a bit with the P neck width (the Highway One is quite a thick, modern C shape) after feeling so comfortable on the GL neck.

I'm currently playing with an unreal drummer who LOVES fast improv jams, and I'd like to find out if there are any particular series of P necks out there that you may have discovered (without speaking about all the technicality and measurements etc), immediately got you excited in terms of smooth, faster playability with more of the Jazz feel (and less taxing on the thumb/forefinger muscles). The difference in nut width does not bother me - it's the actual neck width and shape from front to back.

I adore the sound and unusually heavy weight of my P, and before I swap out to a J neck (Adam Clayton style), I thought I'd ask here first in case you have experienced similar.

I know the early 70s "A" necks were more of a Jazz taper, but I'm more interested in the reissue or more commonly available necks if you know of any.

Hi. I'm not familiar with many of the necks available now. The only recent Fenders I have are an American Standard and a Jaguar. I like them all actually...the American Standard necks feel really good to me, but as does my '66 P and my '75 P. :) Unfortunately, I'm sort of the wrong person to ask, because I really like playing on all of them.

No worries, thanks anyway. Was worth a shot. I'll just have to get around to some stores and play as many as I can and see what I like. Funnily enough, my favorite neck second to the Geddy Lee belongs to my very first Jazz Bass I was given by my mother when I was in my early teens - a 1989 Korean made Squier Jazz. Very thin, smooth and fast. The radius feels kind of like an anomaly - definitely larger than any of the 9.5"s that I own! I should whip that bad boy out more often instead of preserving it under the bed. Haha.

Lakland and G&L both make basses with slim tapers. I had a chance to play a '69 P that had an "A" neck once and it was SUPER comfy! It felt like a slightly flattened out Jazz neck. When I had my own First Act bass built (the P bass in my stable ;)), I had them shape the neck to Lakland Joe Osborn spec. That bass plays like butter.

Indeed. I have a Lakland 55-01 with Nordy Big Singles and Aguilar OPB-1 pre (which I use in passive mode - don't even have a battery in it!) and it is by far the slimmest 5 string neck I've played. That 10-13" compound radius is unreal!

I will shell out for a Lakland P one of these days...
