Double Bass The Soundpost

Are there particular things you guys play to test the fit of the sound post? I usually play the E and A in first position on the D and G string, respectively, to hear the sympathetic vibration on the lower open strings. Unisons don't seem to work as well, but humidity changes make it hard to tell what's really happening.

I don't think that's a valid test of the fit or the position of the sound post. There is nothing specific one can play to test for proper fit. Fit, in terms of tightness and the mating of surfaces is determined by a good luthier, although poor fit can certainly affect the sound. As for the position of the sound post, that affects several aspects of the overall voice of the bass and the balance across strings.
