I only see theme used as promotional attention-getters, drawing people to some kind of occasion or event on the ground (movie or restaurant opening, e.g.).

I still see "searchlights" on occasion, usually mounted on the front of a vehicle, we call 'em driving lights, or spotties. Of course we also use Spotties for spotlighting (i.e. hunting poor innocent wildlife in the night) Actually, the wildlife we hunt are usually invasive species like rabbits, buffalo and camels.

I assure you that shelves can be designed for this application that will last. I'm a mechanical engineer, I guarantee you I can design a shelf structure that will stand the gaff.

It may well have been that knuckleheads who insisted on standing on the swung-out shelves, or doing other stupid things, were the cause for that design's demise. I grew up in a family where we knew the value of a dollar and so we took care of our possessions, and said fridge never had any issues with the swing-out shelves. I don't even remember when my parents retired it, but it was probably when they moved out of that house and rented it out, because the fridge in question was not automatically defrosting and they probably couldn't rely on tenants to defrost it once a year.

I'm also guessing that making and installing the swing-out shelves was more expensive than making and installing the fixed shelves, so it may have been a cost-cutting decision as well.

That, and you lose shelf space since the shelf has to be rounded/cut off to make the swing.

Whether that's a major concern or a marketing point to cover the cost saving, I couldn't say.

Is this the same Stop and Shop that's currently all over New England? Or another separate chain with the same name?
