Double Bass Thinking bad thoughts...

Unfortunately, I'm being laid off tomorrow, and I'm thinking about selling my 1060 Kay S9. I'm primarily an electric player and I was just getting back into DB. I really don't want to let her go, but sometimes you've gotta do what you've gotta do....

I was wondering if you could help me figure out how much I should try to get for this one. I traded a gentleman some guitar equipment that to both of us was a fair deal, but I really don't know what a good dollar value would be for this bass.

unfortunately, I don't have a camera at the moment to show any pictures. The bass is in descent cosmetic condition for an instrument of it's age. The finish has typical checking to be expected. It was recently set up by a Master Luthier in my area (South East Michigan) who carved a new adjustable bridge for it. He also glued a few gaps between the sides and the top/back. It has a set of almost new Pirastro Evah Pirazzi strings in Weich gague with very few hours of play on them.... Now for the issues with it. The finish on the back of the neck was sanded down and a tung oil finish was applied. It feels very nice, and I think it looks nice but it's not the original finish. Before I got this bass someone opened up the treble side f hole a bit so they could fit their preamp in there. The luthier said that it isn't a structural issue, it just doesn't look great.

The luthier I took it to agreed that is was a very nice bass in both sound and playability. The only issues were the cosmetic ones I listed above and my sloppy noob technique.

I'd be selling it with a stand (no bag) and an inexpensive french style glasser bow.

I very much appreciate any and all help with this. I'm not desperate to get rid of it, but it would help alot right now. Thanks in advance for all of your help.

MR PC: I'd thought about taking it up there, it's a bit over an hour drive there and I was hoping to save on having to make the trip. I think it may be worth it though. It's always fun to try out what they have up there anyway.

TroyK: I totally understand. I'm very close to Ann Arbor and not terribly far from Lansing or Detroit, so hopefully those areas will have someone looking for a new piece...

Anonymatt: I don't have kids yet, so I don't have to sell to keep food on the table for them... That being said, as much as I enjoy playing DB, and as long as I had to wait to get my own bass, it's not my primary instrument. I've got a couple of guitars and amps that will be on the chopping block first, but I'm getting prepared should I have to sell this... I appreciate the warning/advice and I am very much hoping that I won't regret having to sell if it comes to that....

It is pretty specific to your local market. Two years ago I drove about 11 hours to see a fellow 80 miles outside of Chicago who had several basses he had been trying to sell locally for six months. $1700 later, I drove away with two nice '50s Kays and fully Carved '40s Juzek and brought them back to North Carolina. I sold the two old Kays within a week and the Juzek within a month, for a total of just under $10K for all three, with the carved Juzek bringing in the lowest dollar amount...
