Thinking of going filter

And likely won't find an Alembic in my price range. Has anyone added the ACG EQ-01 preamp (http://www.bestbassgear.com/acg-eq-01-preamp.htm) to any of their basses? Obviously not exactly the same thing but a very flexible system. Just curious what folks have thought of that pre in action, and if so, what pickups (soaps especially) you've used it with.

It's an acquired taste. You either like it oryou don't. The electronics in my Alembic is great, but I also dig the traditional 2 & 3 band eq.

So what's the problem with trying to get some current opinions? If I want to know something I will search it out but if the answers are more than a month or two old I'll make a thread anyway.

There isn't much in those older threads about the specific pickups used with the preamp either. What i was hoping to find was someone or two who had the preamp and then discussed the pickups used with it; get an idea if people were using it with Barts, or Big Splits, or whathaveyou. Would still love to hear that if it's out there.

Gotta look out for the "search function " police, haven't tried it myself, but have read mixed things about the pre +soaps

There are no issues with any pickups that I am aware of. I use the pre-amps with single coils, hum buckers, split coils and multi coils without any problems. The only pickup issue we had was with Alembics but we have a solution for that now if needed.

What is in the soap bars since that only describes the casing not what is in it.

I'm thinking of putting the pre in a Carvin BB75 that has their recent humbucking soapbars, as I like those pickups a lot. But, I may change them out just to see what's out there. I'll be sticking with passive humbuckers though, so they should all be roughly the same to the pre. I won't be using anything active like the Alembics or EMGs.

One more Alan Does the 2 pickup/5 pot version of the ACG EQ-02 Preamp have a single LPF and a single HPF, or does it have one LPF for each pickup and a shared HPF?

I just within the last week put a ACG EQ-01 in a Fender '78 fretless P that has a J in the bridge. I love it. Right now the bass is loaded with piccolo nickel rounds but I'll swap back out to TI flats as soon as I'm done with some tracks I'm in the middle of. I'll post samples at some point.

I'm a huge fan of the filter concept. I have a long background in synthesizers where the concept is a basic building block so it's a comfortable approach for me where it might not be for others. If the pres weren't so pricey I'd have them in each of my basses.

I would even like more resonance from the filters, maybe into self oscillation even. I'm probably the only one that would like that though. I am considering doing a mod where I can plug an expression pedal in for the cutoff/sweep of the bridge filter. Best wah wah sound ever.

Here's a pic of the bass right now, way more knobs than before...

Knerbs from top are:
1. stacked volume/balance
2. stacked neck LPF cutoff/resonance
3. stacked bridge LPF cutoff/resonance
4. stacked HPF cutoff/resonance
5. passive tone control
6. blank spot where I'm going to put a passive/active switch, used to be where the on/off switch for LED's was
7. switching pot to turn on/adjust side dot LED brightness (not part of the preamp)

Yeah, that's a lot of knobs! I've got a background in synths as well, I think it helps in this particular instance.

I've put 2 of these in my builds and at first I wasn't too sure about them, but they quickly grew on me. I found that I almost never adjust my mid on a 3 band eq, so having a filter is pretty sweet. The last build I put it on a couple Delano SBC pickups and fell in love.

Yep, I highly recommend the EQ-01 if you have the extra cash and have a bass with 2 pickups, having an LPF for each pickup is very handy.

Kind of an unfortunate naming convention, you'd think the EQ-01 would have one LPF and the 02 would have 2 LPF's but it's the opposite.
