Double Bass This combo for doubling??

Dealing with:
Juzek with a kna DB-1 piezo in the bridge. Next through a Fishman Platinum Pro EQ/DI for impedance matching and then into... ??

Any opinions on current Ampeg RB-210 combo as being up to the job on small to medium gigs, amp alone. Quiet jazz trio or supporting guitar, cocktail drums. I realize the DI to FOH capability as needed. How loud and clean is the amp as a standalone? Have no need for the included 'grit' voicings.

Same amp (without Fishman) capable of similar electric bass tasks? Don't need thunderous SVT-ish one bit.

Compactness for transit is important.

Thanks in advance for input.

Depending on your volume requirements any of the Traynor SB series will sound great, last for years, and can be repaired, unlike most of the less expensive throwaway “ econo-combos” Traynor provides a proper schematic and parts list for repairs.
Thanks. I'll do some Sweetwater or Gollihur researching on your recommendation. Is it also suited to electric bass application?

  1. It's a cello with a Realist Copperhead but for years I've run it through a Fishman Platinum Plus, then into an A/B box. I run my '60s Fender Jazz straight into the A/B then they go into the amp with the amp set flat. I can get the bass sound I need using the bass vvt. Works great! We even run a 4 channel board for vocals and guitars thru the xlr input on the amp. Sounds warm and covers the venues we play.

Go with the traynor 10 or 12 SB combo. The 15 isn't voiced great for upright.
That's very interesting as the I believe the heads for all three of those combos are identical, must have something to do with the 15" driver in a larger cabinet. I generally prefer modern 10's and 12's to 15's for Double Bass anyway. The last 15" Speaker combo I owned was an Ampeg B-15N(C) which I still own, but the cabinet design of that combo is very different from anything on the market today.

The RB210 probably wouldn't be my first choice, but if it's what I had, I would make it work.

250W into a pair of internal 10s should be plenty, but it depends on how much thump you want. Thump from upright tends to eat up a lot of power. In general I think a tweeter is preferrable with upright. However, the tweeter in the RB210 is on or off, rather than adjustable. The tweeter most likely reaches down into the high mids, which can be a problematic frequency range for upright. While I usually prefer to leave a tweeter on, it can be beneficial to dial it back, to reduce piezo quack and rasp.

The input impedance for the RB210 is listed as 1meg, but drops to 75K when the input pad is engaged. I doubt you will need a padded input for a piezo. 1meg is usually fine for piezos.

If you can, do a demo with your bass.

I recently picked up a Genz Benz Shuttle 3.0 110t combo, with the carrying bag, for 375 USD. It's by far the best doubling amp I've had, 18 lbs, loud, with a nice transparent voicing and flexible EQ. If you can find one in good condition under 500 USD that'd be my vote. There are newer options that are incrementally better in some ways, but for a lot more money.

I also schlepped around a B-15n for a bit with my M-1. I ended up swapping it out for a WD 800 and SW 15. Still a 15 but I can cop a B-15 tone as well as others out of it at a lighter weight. My best-doubling amp to date.

I started using a Mark Bass CMD 121. So far, no problem. I think it will fit your requirements.
