This Took Long Enough....!

Late starter here at 61. At 16 I jumped ship from a dead end on Trumpet and self-taught myself on guitar. Tried to avoid the problems that stone walled me on Trumpet, but seemed to have created a number of new ones. I played well enough until a bad car wreck with head injury in 1988 when pretty much everything I knew vanished from my memory. As a result I got badly sidetracked and ended up spending far too much time as a Fencing Coach.

I am most hobbled by a lack of music theroy long term. I have always deeply enjoyed Bass, loving all the classic rockers starting with Jack Bruce, Chris Squire, etc. My former Jazz background allowed me to enjoy folks like Ron Carter. Over the years, it seemed like without fail, every time I sought out others to play with in a band, they always wanted me to switch to Bass. In my head playing it required actual knowleddge, and I didn't want to be yet another guitarist holding a Bass and plucking away at roots.

About a year ago my wife admitted an interest in Bass and began taking lessons. She has probably far more actual talent musically than myself, but I'm at the age where better doesn't matter, just different does. Nightly I hear her working away and started to dig into gear, players and everything Bass.

So here I am finally. Started taking actual lessons to play the instrument as it is meant to be played. Figure it's a good place to finally learn my theroy to help with the overall ability to be a musician. Dusting off the old Epiphone I got in the 90's, a five string Tune and an 80s Aria Pro Two five string as I get underway. Now going into a music store is tice as dangerous with all the cool things I end up wanting!

OK- enough blather, gotta go practice.

Welcome back. Pattern playing and knowing where those patterns are on the fretboard helped me the most.

The Major Scale Box Pattern
G|~~|---A----|-------|---B---|---C---|1st string
D|~~|---E----|---F---|--------|--G----|
A|~~|---B----|---C---|-------|---D----|
E|~~|---------|---G---|-------|---A----| 4th string

I put the root note of what I'm playing on the E string (G at the 3rd fret, for the G scale or G chord) and move the above pattern as needed for any new scales and/or chords.

Natual Minor scale -- use the major scale pattern and flat the 3, 6 & 7.
Lydian -- flat the 4.
Mixolydian -- flat the 7.
Dorian - use the minor scale and sharp the b6 back to a natural 6.
Phrygian - use the minor scale and flat the 2.

That should get you going, get the rest at How to get started? | TalkBass.com as you need them.

Have fun.
